@soy-gia soy luna tag - I’ve been saving this until I finished the show so here are my final answers:
1. Favourite Album: Modo Amar!! (Also title track is my favorite song 🎵 - would be even better if Valentina sang on the studio version but I digress....)
2. Favourite Season: 3 is my personal favorite, but 1 is a very close runner-up
3. Favourite Canon Ship: Simbar (honorable mention: Gastina)
4. Favourite Non-Canon Ship: Jim/Yam & Ámbilia (in a non-homophobic world they would have both been canon lesbihonesst)
5. Favourite Friendship: Nina/Luna/Simon & Gaston/Matteo
6. Favourite Rollerskates: Simon’s skates - blue with lightening bolts + they match his guitar!
7. Favourite Luna Outfit: Her S3 style is just *chefs kiss*
However, I also like the s2 Roda fest outfit lol
Tumblr media
Yes, I realize how ridiculous this looks but during the performances it just works! Or maybe it's just her running around Cancun in it in those iconic final moments that just sticks so heavily in my brain. 8. Favourite Ámbar Outfit: Emerald dress in Chicas vs Chicos, S2 Gala Dress, All of her goth/punk! looks in S3, Her Flash Open Grease look
Tumblr media
I am looking respectively 👀
9. Favourite Open: S1 Chicas vs. Chicos but S3 Flash Open as a close runner up
10. Fab and Chic or Felicityfornow: Felicityfornow because Nina (honorable mention: Ja Jazmin!)
11. Tamara or Juliana: Juliana!!! ROLLER MOM!!
12. Sofia Carson Cameo or Sabrina Carpenter Cameo: Sofia gets Ambar/Luna to perform backup together which I love. But nothing is funnier than whatever they made Simón do on stage with Sabrina to make him seem part of that performance. Plus we got to hear Simón and The Roller Band speak some English and these two adorable shorties on skates so Miss Carpenter it is! (tbh both are awkward as hell tho lmao)
Tumblr media
13. Favourite Group Competition Skate: Alas s1 finale & I’ve Got A Feeling with the Core Four
14. Favourite Duo Competition Skate: Ámbar/Matteo Mirame A Mi or Profugos (the Sharpay/Ryan energy of their choreo tho)
15. Favourite Rollerband song: Alzo Mi Bandera or Decirte lo que siento (Pedro’s voice 🥰) --- however, the s3 storage room version of Un Destino makes my heart full ❤️
16. Jim or Yam: Yam, but they’re girlfriends so I feel bad choosing
17. Tino or Cato: can’t choose, they’re one in the same stooge to me
18. Season 1 Amanda or Season 2 Amanda: S1
19. Cancún Mansion or Buenos Aires Mansion: Cancun Mansion - we love a beach view!
Tumblr media
20. Luna’s Pink Skates or Yellow Skates: I was gonna go with her classic Pink but I really grew to like the Yellow. We love a rebirth!
21. Pure Ambar or Punk Ambar: Punk Ámbar bc black really is her color
Tumblr media
22. Música en ti or La Vida Es Un Sueño: La vida es un sueno - that scene is a MOMENT, plus it’s a personal fave
Tumblr media
23. Simbar or Lutteo:  Simbar!! (duh)
Tumblr media
24. Favourite Kiss of the Show: Every Simbar kiss, but I mean this one is pretty satisfying/epic/romantic

Snapshots: Better Friends
.
Andrea looks around the crowded cafe from one of the corner tables as she sips her coffee and takes little bites of her cheesecake. It’s just after lunchtime in the middle of summer; the weather is hot and humid, prompting people to crowd in air-conditioned coffee shops. She’s glad that she came early enough to be able to secure a good table.
She’s waiting for Valentina to arrive. The two of them haven’t really spoken since a little after Valentina’s father died. Valentina more or less cut herself off from everyone after that tragedy and, unlike Sergio and Nayeli — and Lucho, may he rest in peace — Andrea hasn’t made an effort to reach out.
Then again, she and Valentina didn’t really hang out much even before that.
Andrea’s parents, both lawyers, have worked for Valentina’s family for as long as she can remember. She and Valentina met when they were in their teens and they became kind of friends. ‘Kind of' because Valentina was studying in Canada. They are now going to the same university, but Valentina, like their other friends, always used to cut classes and go to parties every day of the week, and that simply isn’t Andrea’s style.
It’s not like she doesn’t know how to have fun; she does, but she also wants to do well in her studies and become a successful lawyer like her parents. She used to find it a shame that Valentina often succumbed to peer pressure when, on the few times they talked without others interrupting, Valentina would eagerly discuss politics and documentaries with her. She and Valentina aren’t close, so she never really cared that Valentina chose to go drinking and partying every day with their other friends. However, she is ashamed to admit that, when those so-called ‘friends’ cyberbullied Valentina for being gay, a part of her felt that Valentina brought it on herself for choosing to stick with shallow friends who turned on her the moment she deviated from the norm.
It was that guilt that made Andrea reach out to Valentina a week ago, albeit tentatively. She wasn’t really aiming for a coffee meetup. She only commented on Valentina’s latest Instagram picture of her girlfriend, saying that she’s very pretty; Valentina agreed profusely, complete with hearts and smiley emojis; she messaged Valentina privately to tell her that she never posted mean things about her; Valentina said she knew; they got to talking about how the other was doing; and then they agreed to meet up for coffee.
Valentina would be bringing her girlfriend. Andrea is very keen to meet the latter. Not only is Valentina Carvajal dating a woman — it’s still quite shocking, even months later — she also overcame peer and societal pressure for that woman, even going so far as to come out on national television. Andrea is suitably mind-blown.
.
Presently, Valentina arrives at the coffee shop, scanning the place until she catches sight of Andrea. With her is the woman Andrea has seen on her Instagram posts. The two of them are holding hands, and Andrea watches with interest as they approach.
“Hola, Andrei,” Valentina greets cheerfully.
“Vale, hey,” Andrea returns. She stands up to kiss her friend’s cheek and gets drawn in a tight hug, which prompts a laugh out of her. That’s one thing that hasn’t changed about Valentina.
But Valentina has changed. Her smile as she steps back from the hug and takes her girlfriend’s hand again is unlike anything Andrea has ever seen. Valentina has always been a bubbly, cheerful person, but now joy seems to radiate out of her.
“Esta es mi novia, Juliana,” Valentina says, her tone full of pride, like she’s presenting some sort of great discovery.
Juliana is dressed simply: sneakers, jeans, and an artfully ripped and washed-out denim jacket over a dark yellow shirt. She is pretty in an unassuming sort of way, wearing only the barest hint of make-up, though Andrea wonders if she did something with her eyelashes or they’re just naturally long and curved like that.
Andrea finds herself wanting to tease Valentina. She settles for shooting a smirk at her friend, who flushes and hurries the introductions along. After Andrea and Juliana shake hands and exchange greetings, the three of them take their seats, with Andrea sitting across from Valentina and Juliana.
After a waiter takes Valentina and Juliana’s orders, Andrea makes small talk with them about the summer heat and the cafe’s artsy ambience until the same waiter returns with two cups of coffee, an almond croissant, and a cinnamon bun. They fall silent while the two women wordlessly halve their pastries to share with the other, murmuring their thanks as they smile and stare at each other for a moment longer than what’s probably polite in company.
Andrea observes them with a smile, noting how they seem to flow around each other, though she makes no comment on it. Instead, she asks Valentina about how she has been doing since they last saw each other at the beginning of the year.
Valentina tells Andrea about having dropped some of her subjects, which explains why Andrea no longer saw her at the university towards the end of the school year. Valentina doesn’t say the reason for it but she doesn’t need to; her family’s trials and tribulations have been front-page news since her father’s death. Glossing over that fact, Valentina goes on to say that she’s taking summer classes so she can make up some of the lost credits.
Apparently, one of the factors behind that decision is because Juliana is also taking summer classes. Juliana candidly elaborates that she’s taking part in an accelerated program so she could earn her high school diploma before she starts at the Ferrer Fashion Institute in the fall, on an almost full scholarship. Andrea has always been good at gleaning facts that people aren’t saying, and from Juliana’s explanations, she learns three things about her: that she’s younger than Andrea and Valentina, that she doesn’t come from wealth, and that she’s the fashion designer ‘friend’ who Valentina bragged about all those months ago.
Andrea couldn’t help but tease Valentina about the last one.
Valentina’s resulting blush and almost-shy but pleased smile makes Andrea realise that her friend never actually liked Lucho, not even a little bit. Valentina never got bashful with or over him, and she has certainly never smiled like that because of him. The fact that Lucho’s gone is the only reason that Andrea doesn’t make that observation out loud.
Andrea makes the mistake of asking after Eva Carvajal, who was represented by Andrea’s mom during her court trials. Valentina’s reply to her question is short; she’s clearly uncomfortable about the subject. Things would have gotten awkward were it not for Juliana dropping her hand under the table. Andrea can’t see it, but it’s clear that Juliana has put her hand on Valentina’s thigh. Somehow, with that one gesture, Juliana is able to draw Valentina back from one of those moody spirals she occasionally falls into.
Glad that she doesn’t have to deal with Valentina’s moodines, Andrea steers the conversation back to safer waters; namely, Juliana. The other woman seems a little shy at having the focus on her, but Valentina’s bright smile as she gazes at her girlfriend tells Andrea that she asked the right question this time.
When Andrea learns that Juliana is from the USA, her interest is piqued even further. However, Juliana seems hesitant to say anything about her life before moving to Mexico. The warning look Valentina sends her way discourages Andrea from probing, so she asks Juliana about the sights and spots she’s been to in Mexico City and surrounding towns.
Andrea has suggested probably a dozen places, Juliana nodding politely at each one, when Valentina interrupts.
“Andrea,” Valentina starts, “Juls has been here for about five months, she has been to all of those places. With me.”
“Val’s been showing me around,” Juliana adds. The two of them smile at each other, Valentina dropping her hand under the table, probably to hold Juliana’s hand.
“Really?” Andrea can’t hide the note of surprise in her voice.
“Of course,” Valentina says. “What kind of negligent girlfriend do you take me for?” she asks in a faux-insulted tone.
Andrea doesn’t know how to reply to that. She thought Valentina would have been kept busy by her family’s issues. Lucho used to complain endlessly about how Valentina always prioritised her family before him, even before Valentina’s father passed away. Even without considering her family, Andrea thinks that Valentina was negligent with Lucho — not that he and his tantrums deserved any attention.
As Andrea looks across the table at Juliana poking Valentina in the side, prompting soft giggles out of the latter, she realises that she shouldn’t be surprised that Valentina has taken the time to show Juliana all around Mexico City.
Juliana glances at Andrea, but Valentina seems to have forgotten about everyone else around them. And are they somehow sitting closer than they were before?
Andrea clears her throat. “So, which ones were your favourites, Juliana? Of the places you’ve checked out, I mean.”
“Ah, me gusta los parques,” Juliana replies. Valentina rests her arm on the table as she gazes at Juliana, nearly putting her elbow on her plate of pastries. “Y los museos de arte. También, me gusta mucho Coyoacán.”
“Te lo encanta,” Valentina chimes in, her tone affectionately teasing.
Juliana smiles at her. “Es muy bonito, ese- ah… ‘neighbourhood’?” she says, sheepishly quoting the last word.
Valentina returns the smile. “Alcaldía,” she corrects gently.
Andrea is slightly appalled that someone would not know the term ‘alcaldía’, but Juliana’s cheeky response of, “That’s what I said,” in English, makes both her and Valentina laugh.
They start talking about the museum and other installations dedicated to Frida Kahlo in Coyoacán, which turns to a comparison of Mexican artists, and finally about art in general, a subject which both Valentina and Juliana clearly enjoy discussing. From there, their conversation flows on to other topics: from Mexican films, to cafes and restaurants around Mexico City, to the similarities and differences between Texas’ Mexican food and actual Mexican cuisine.
The afternoon passes by in pleasant conversation. They end up having to buy a few more cups of coffee and additional selections of pastries so as to not get kicked out of the cafe.
At one point, Juliana excuses herself from the table to go to the toilet. Valentina seems like she’s considering going with Juliana, but the two women exchange a look and Valentina stays seated. Valentina stares at Juliana until she disappears around a corner.
Andrea is about to make a teasing comment on Valentina’s dopey smile when her expression turns into a frown.
“That man is staring at her,” Valentina says flatly.
Andrea looks in the direction of Valentina’s disapproving stare and sees their waiter.
“I knew he was flirting with her,” Valentina continues, turning to Andrea. “Juls doesn’t realise it– she never does, but these men trying to flirt with her are very annoying.”
Andrea is both amused and surprised. Maybe that waiter was indeed flirting, but she’s pretty sure he was trying to flirt with all three of them. Andrea herself enjoyed the brief attention; the man is quite good-looking. Andrea does her best not to laugh because Valentina sounds serious, but something in her expression must have given away her amusement.
“Qué?” says Valentina.
“I’ve never seen you like this before,” Andrea says frankly.
“Like what?”
“Like… like this,” Andrea replies, waving in Valentina’s direction.
Valentina is so attentive with Juliana, so visibly adoring, and a little possessive too.
“So… into someone,” Andrea settles on saying. “And it’s not just that…”
Valentina’s brows are furrowed in that instant, but there’s a lightness and clarity to her expression that Andrea has never seen before. She seems so present, so in the moment, like she’s exactly where she wants to be.
“I mean,” Andrea continues, “you’re taking summer classes!”
It’s the last thing she expected of Valentina or anyone in their old group of friends, all of whom come from families who can afford to pay their tuition fees without blinking an eye. Andrea herself doesn’t have to worry about her tuition fees, but at least she makes good use of the money her parents are spending on her. Valentina, on the other hand—
“You’ve never worried about classes before,” Andrea adds. “I didn’t even know that you like going to parks and museums, or just chilling out in cafes. It’s like you’re a completely different person,” Andrea states, though as soon as the words are out of her mouth she realises it’s not exactly true. “But not really,” she corrects herself. “It’s just that you seem more… I don’t know,” she gives up, “I can’t put my finger on it.”
Valentina’s frown disappears and she lets out a small smile. “I feel more myself,” Valentina admits quietly as she stirs her coffee, probably as an excuse to look down. “All those times with our fr– with Lucho and Nayeli and the others– I felt like I was pretending to like the parties and the alcohol and the… the drugs,” she adds in a whisper. “I really admired that you could say no when we tried to pressure you to come with us, and I’m really sorry for my part in that–”
“Vale, no,” Andrea has to stop her. “You’ve never– I think we were in the same boat.”
“I suppose so,” Valentina agrees, “but unlike you, I couldn’t say no to them…. When I met Juls, she– she’s so genuine and sincere, you know? The first time we talked, it was like… she already knew me, and liked me for me. She had no idea who my family was,” she says, chuckling at some private memory. “And the more we got to know each other, the more she made me want to be genuine to myself. Just by being herself, she makes me want to go after the things I want, not the things that people think I should want. Does that make sense?”
“Yes,” Andrea says, nodding a few times. She herself has always been one to go after the things she wants, even as a child. “It’s great to see you like this, Vale,” she says honestly, smiling at her friend across the table. I’m glad you met Juliana. I’m happy for you.”
Valentina breaks into a wide grin. “I’m happy for me too. I’ve never been so… well, I–”
Juliana chooses that moment to return. If possible, Valentina’s smile becomes even more radiant.
Andrea doesn’t need Valentina to describe exactly how happy she is. Andrea can see it written all over her face.
.
Later, Andrea says goodbye to her friend and her friend’s girlfriend with promises to keep in touch even over the summer break. She takes a moment to observe the two women as they walk away together, Valentina’s arm around Juliana’s shoulder. Andrea went into their meetup expecting to catch up with Valentina and get to know her girlfriend. To that end, she was not disappointed. She realises, however, that she is also getting to know Valentina properly for the first time since they met all those years ago.
She hopes that they can start to be better friends to each other now.

You guys remember that wild Val has an evil twin plot line that someone came up with a while back? I can’t remember who it was but it went something like this:
Juliana and Valentina are together and everything’s great, Juls is studying design and fashion, Val is back studying journalism or whatever else she wanted to do. Val has to go somewhere with someone (Guille maybe?) and ends up being in a near fatal car crash on an abandoned road in the middle of nowhere. Turns out this as not an accident because Valentina’s twin sister (what did they name her? Veronica? Valencia? Something with a V.) sabotaged her car in order to take over Valentina’s life. I think Val 2.0 wanted just the fortune and had no plans to stick around but of course you can’t pretend to be Valentina without being around Juliana. Juliana suspects that something is off with Val and figures it’s stress so she takes her on a stargazing date and Val 2.0 realizes, oh shit, she’s in love with Juls.
In the meantime, our Val is living in the woods somewhere with this old couple who nurse her back to health. She has no idea who she is or what her names, only vague memories of someone called Juls. She works for the old couple and helps them out, (maybe on a farm or something? I vaguely remember this guys) until one day she catches sight of a magazine with a picture of Val 2.0 and Juls, announcing that they are engaged.
I don’t remember what happened after that but I think it was some angsty stuff about Val finding herself again and winning Juliana back by proving she was the real Val?
Someone please tell me I’m not the only one who remembers this whole scenario?

Chapter 30 _ Cordialmente Invitada
Juliana’s first semester ended in a flash. Her second semester was off to a great start as well. She was two weeks into her classes when she received an invitation through the mail. It was an invitation to attend New York Fashion Week specifying that she was 1 of 25 candidates to go on this trip, all expenses paid.
The first person she told about the news was her father. He was one of her biggest cheerleaders and he knew going to  New York was one of her childhood dreams. He told her to meet him and her mother for dinner to celebrate the opportunity she had earned.
Her second call was to Valentina. It was an exciting call for the both of them because Valentina had just received her own Fashion Week invitation. Renata and the institute had officially hired Valentina as their Fashion Photographer and her first assignment would be to accompany the group to New York and photograph the shows and the students in attendance.
That evening Juliana had a celebration dinner with her parents and toasted to her grandmother who instilled her love for fashion without knowing it. Lupe told Juliana how proud she was of her for not letting anyone, including her mother, get in the way of her dreams. Their night ended with a slice of banana bread and a cup of milk.
The following day the 25 students along with the 5 staff members met up during lunch to plan their sleeping arrangements and their assignments. Valentina was introduced as the new photographer. Juliana was put in a room with Valentina, Josie, Penelope, and Renata. The rest of the group was also split into teams of 5. They would be leaving that Thursdays and return the following Friday.
When Thursday rolled around they all met at the airport and were all seated near each other on the plane. The flight took five hours and throughout those five hours Valentina edited some images while Juliana leaned on Valentina’s shoulder, watching her work and eventually falling asleep. They arrived in the city around 11am. They got a shuttle bus and were taken to their hotel.
They would get Thursday to explore a bit and settle in. Given Valentina’s easy going nature she instantly made friends with some of Juliana’s classmates. Once in their room, Renata told the girls to decide between the two beds and she’d sleep on the pullout couch. Josie and Penelope couldn’t believe they were going to spend the entire week with the face of RIC. The Saltzman family was well acquainted with the Carvajal family but Josie had never actually gotten one on one time with Renata and she was a big fan of her work. Penelope on the other hand didn’t know them much, aside from Valentina these past few months. She hid it well but she too was very excited to be around one of her favorite designers. When she found out that Renata was opening her own fashion school she knew that was her opportunity to learn from one of the best so applying was a no brainer to her.
Renata being the bright spirit she is insisted the girls called her by her first name, no Mrs. Carvajal just Renata. She even joked that that title belonged to Juliana which caused everyone to laugh and a huge blush to spread across Juliana’s face. Renata and Juliana had become great friends and Valentina was very happy that they had the friendship they did. Renata was not only a mentor to Juliana she was almost like an older sister.
The girls were getting ready to head downstairs to meet up with the rest of the group while Renata explained the plan for the day. “We’re going to lunch as a group but then you have 5 hours to do whatever you want. The rest of the professors and I will be doing our own thing as well. Just meet up back at the restaurant by 6pm so we can have dinner and then head to bed. We have an early morning tomorrow.” Renata said as she wrapped her scarf around her neck.
“Do you want to come with us Natty? We’re all sticking together anyway. We have our own itinerary for today. I’m sure Josie and Pen would love to spend some time with you.” Valentina offered her sister in law.
Renata agreed under the condition that she get to add one location to their itinerary but wouldn’t say what it was because it was surprise for Valentina.
After dinner they took off to their sightseeing adventure. Since it was near the restaurant, their first stop was the Empire State Building. Then they went to the Macy’s because seeing that Macy’s was on Juliana’s NY bucket list. After Macy’s they grabbed an Uber to Renata’s stop. Valentina was skeptical at first because they were dropped off outside of a Chipotle yet she knew that her sister in law couldn’t stand that restaurant so this stop didn’t make sense.
Seeing Valentina’s confused face Renata giggled as she began to speak. “No. We’re not here to get you a burrito. We’re actually going across the street.” She said making all 4 of the girls turn around and see what could be across the street for Renata to insist they add this stop.
They began to cross the street and when Renata made a left turn which they followed. The girls crossed 26th street and Renata began to fidget, something only Juliana noticed. As they approached the store, it all made sense to Juliana and she gasped. Valentina on the other hand couldn’t put two and two together.
“What are we doing here?” Valentina asked completely clueless.
“Val. Are you serious?” Renata and Juliana said simultaneously.
“Yeah why are we in buybuy BABY?” Once she said the name of the store it finally clicked. “No! Are you serious!?” She said covering her mouth trying not to burst before getting confirmation.
Renata nodded and Valentina pulled her in for a hug and she squealed. “Oh my god! I’m gonna be a tia!”
Juliana and the other couple had huge smiles on their faces waiting for their turn to congratulate Renata on her pregnancy. They were all invited into a hug once Valentina was done squeezing her sister in law. Valentina had happy tears streaming down her face as did Renata and Juliana.
Once they settled down, they walked outside to find a place to sit.
“Wait so how long have you known?” Valentina asked sitting on Juliana’s lap as she looked at Renata.
Renata smiled knowing what Valentina’s response would be. “Last Monday.”
“So you’re telling me you’ve known for over a week but I’m only finding out now?” Valentina said with a look on her face that made her sister in law laugh.
“Yep. I told your brother that night and then we told your dad and Lucia on Wednesday but I asked them not to tell you anything because I wanted to tell you on this trip.” Renata said clasping her hands together.
Meanwhile, Josie, Penelope and Juliana laughed at Valentina’s reaction to knowing she found out after her father. Juliana tightened her hold around Valentina as she nuzzled into her right side.
After talking a bit more about the pregnancy they took another Uber but this time towards Time Square. They enjoyed the rest of their free time and eventually met up with the rest of the group for dinner.
The rest of the week consisted of attending select shows. Valentina was having a blast taking pictures of the runway and sneaking in a picture of her girlfriend’s reaction every now and then. She also took many pictures of the rest of the group. By the time the following Friday came along Valentina had more than enough content to keep her busy editing nonstop for an entire week. Renata promised to give her a bonus if she finished the images by the following Sunday.
Juliana and the rest of the girls on the trip were convinced by Valentina to do a last minute photoshoot in their room. Everyone had gotten to know each other pretty well and by now they could consider each other friends. Juliana felt content knowing when they got back things would be easier on campus because she’d have people to talk with throughout the day and she wouldn’t just third-wheel Josie and Penelope.
Valentina took Juliana to dinner that same night. They hadn’t gotten much time to hang out during the shows because Valentina was busy working. Valentina had spoken to Renata and convinced her to switch the couple’s return date for that Sunday. She wanted to spend the weekend with Juliana in New York. She had an apartment in the city and she wanted Juliana to be able to see more of the city since they didn’t have too much time for exploring.
“Baby, how did you enjoy New York?” Valentina asked Juliana as they waited for their meals to arrive.
Juliana put her phone away as she gave Valentina her full attention. “It’s beautiful, I just I’d had more time to explore it. There’s still so much to see.” She said taking a sip of her water.
Valentina smiled knowing that would be Juliana’s answer. “How do you feel about spending a few more days here, just the two of us?”
Giving her a questioning look Juliana turned her head sideways and said, “I’d love that but we leave tonight with the rest of the group, babe.”
“I might have gotten Renata to change our return date.” Valentina said biting her lip nervously.
“Of course you did. Well I just gotta tell my parents to not pick us up tonight then. Why didn’t you consult me though?” Juliana said, not angry just curious. “Did you expect me to say no?”
Shaking her head Valentina responded rapidly, “No, I just wanted to surprise you, I didn’t think it’d be a big deal.”
Nodding her head unconsciously Juliana bit her lip before responding, “It’s not, I’d just like to have some input when it comes to situation where we should both agree on something.”
Valentina instantly knew what Juliana meant and she internally agreed to slow down a bit and take her into consideration more often, “Okay, I promise next time we’ll discuss and plan things out properly, together.”
“Thank you, that’s all I ask. I wanna feel like I have a say in some of these decisions.” Taking a hold of Valentina’s hand and giving it a gentile squeeze Juliana continued, “I know we’re both very independent but if we’re an ‘us’ then that means it’s you & me so we gotta make decisions together when it’s something for the both of us.”
Just as Juliana was ending her sentence the waiter came back with their food and drinks. The girls ate their food silently enjoying every bite. Halfway through their meal Juliana began to laugh realizing tomorrow’s date. “Val., why don’t we start celebrating the 14th of September as our Valentine’s Day instead of the 14th of February? I just remembered our talk from last year.”
As a blush grew across Valentina’s face she joined Juliana in her laughter, “I’d completely forgotten about that mix up. I’m on board though, it can be our own little inside joke.”
“Okay, so now that we’ve agreed on making decisions together, what’s the plan for tomorrow then? What would you like to do.” Juliana said with a big smile on her face.
Valentina liked the idea of making it this date a tradition and agreeing on what to do on that day. “Well, I’ve been here multiple times so what else in on your New York bucket list?” She said content to do whatever Juliana wanted.
Juliana pulled out her phone opening her notes and passed it over to Valentina so she could see her travel list along with the places she wanted to visit within those destinations. After deciding how they would distribute their time the following days they headed back to the hotel to grab their belonging and say their goodbyes to the group.
Penelope jokingly told Juliana “don’t do anything I wouldn’t do,” causing a laugh to erupt from Josie because their were very few things Penelope wouldn’t do.
Valentina asked Josie to keep an eye on Renata and told Renata to let her know as soon as they landed and she got home safely so Valentina didn’t worry. Knowing how much of a worrier Valentina was, Renata happily agreed.
Once everyone was on the bus and heading to the airport Juliana and Valentina got into the Uber they ordered and went to Valentina’s apartment to rest for the night.

Episode 80: A Really Reconciliatory Recap
*Grabs MEGAPHONE*
Attention PLEASE....The Suegra has boarded the Ship...I repeat, The Suegra has boarded the ship!
Tumblr media
I always knew that Lupe would come around, and do you know why? because she LOVES Juliana more than anything, and thats what you do when you love someone: you ACCEPT and SUPPORT them for who they really are.
I personally found Lupe's (and Eva's) initial reactions quite baffling, I would NEVER treat someone I care about like that but I KNOW its a reality for many people sadly.  I hope the Lupes and Evas watching the show can see themselves (and their kids/loved ones) in these characters and that It can help them understand and bridge the gap and realize that as clichè as it sounds, LOVE is LOVE.
This show is really out there changing lives for the better and I think it’d deserve all the accolades just for that (even tho the whole show is pretty amazing anyway lol). Humans learn through tales and stories and if Juliantina can make a parent change idea on homophobia or give hope to a kid that his/her parents will eventually come around and accept them then mission accomplished. Slow clap for all involved really, you’re making the world a better place,
One Lupe at a time.
I hope that as we move forward more and more we can all respect and treat each other as HUMANS and understand that in the end we all love the same, there's just more than one way to show it... AND THAT's OK.
(I went Full MACA for a moment there lol)...Anywayyyyyyy ...back to the EP...
Tumblr media
Remember that Telenovela 101 post where I said It was OK to do your best Evil Laughter when the bad guys get what they deserve? Well...
MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
CRY HARDER EVA, CRY HARDERRRRRRR.
Time to check on Val and see how her "Space and Time" life is going ....
Tumblr media
Figured XD.
I honestly think Val pushed Juls away out of self preservation only, since she doesn't wanna risk getting burned (again) by a NOT-SURE-I-WANNA-DO-THIS-Juls.
I think she's just waiting for her to actually go ALL-IN on the relationship and leave all doubts and drama behind, which I believe IS Juls intention anyway, she just has to fuckin' SHOW IT lol. Lupe's OK will definitely help with this IMO.
Also ...Juls-Make-Up-Your-Mind-Please?-Ansgty-Valentina Soundtrack:
"Say You Love Me" by Jessie Ware ...ADD IT TO THE JULIANTINA PLAYLIST!!! XD
Tumblr media
OMG This scene ...you can see when Val STOPS BREATHING for a second there, and that hopeful smile on her face...only to be crushed when she realises its NOT her Favorite-Hitman's-Daughter-Stubborn-Ass-Gurl : (
You can literally see the moment her heart sinks (and shatters into a million pieces) UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. No One does ANGST like a Telenovela you hear me? ...NO ONE.
Tumblr media
Is that Val and Tears I see? WHAT A SURPRISE!....Here's the Give-Val-A-Break edit, I knew it was bound to happen soon anyway lol.
Also Mayela ...keep that wine away from Valentina ...and while we're at it stay away from Valentina and that alberca as well, you hear me!? You're already making shit awkward for Guille and Renata and there's literally only a week left gurl ...AIN'T NOBODY GOT TIME FOR THAT lol.
Tumblr media
Beltran is fully into this redemption arc and all I can say is good for him, and that whole choose one wife/family path? ...Listen, Panchito can take it from here so yeah, the choice is quite simple if you ask me, just saying.
Tumblr media
Lucia showing up to Chivis House ...Well shit. I think she could end up helping them honestly? Once Lupe tells her about Beltran and confirms the whole transmigration thing is real, and also she KNOWS Valentina cares about Juliana so I think she could end up doing the right thing and lend them a place to stay as well.
_______________________________________________________________________
We've reached the "All IS LOST" part of the plot, which means the climax and resolution are right around the corner, this last week is gonna be WILD, I’m REALLY curious to see IF (and HOW WELL) they are gonna be able to stick ALL these landings, I haven't been much disappointed this far so hopefully they'll end on a high note, fingers crossed.
Tumblr media
Also next EP is (the now infamous lol) EPISODE 81, normally I wouldn't pay much attention to a passing comment on an interview ...BUT this is Maca-The-Spoiler-Supreme we're talking about, So MAYBE they elope, have 3 kids, and go on honeymoon ...GUESS WHERE...Costa Rica hahahahaha.
I REALLY want to know what you guys think is gonna happen? let's turn this rambling monologue into a crazy-theories conversation, shall we?
Leave me a comment with your theories about 81 and how do you think Juliantina is gonna endgame this whole thing eventually? K, Thanks, Bye.

Note
So you ever stop and think that Televisa didnt think Juliantina would be a big deal but so many parts of their story is told with a delicate touch? Like i just want to know who said “lets have Juliana run around while shots are being fired and have some get shot RIGHT in front of her but do not have her get shot” and who said “ lets have Valentina answer the phone because she would risk it all for Juliana” like whoooo is responsible!?!?
Honestly, that’s all I can think about! Those are just the latest examples in a really long sequence of surprisingly great decisions.
I cannot stop wondering what went into making this and why it’s so different from all our other stories. What did they bring to this that almost all other creators have had such a hard time replicating? Especially for being a ship in an environment where it’s so new and where it as finished taping before it hit it big so there can be no question of changing the storyline in response to the attention?
They just really said, we’re going to make these two pivotal characters both women, and it’s not going to affect their place in the storyline, but it IS going to affect how their story is told. How rare is that? How often do we get that, if ever? There’s no doubt it’s so much gentler and kinder than so many other telenovela couples. They chose not to go with so many normal telenovela tropes, let alone all our terrible f/f ones. They want to talk? They talk things through. Val should break up with Lucho? She does. Silvina tells Juls she’s not good for Val? Juls straight up tells Val.
I am just so curious how they did this. I did get a couple new followers because of this pairing but for those who’ve followed me for a while, I’ve seen soooo many f/f couples over the years and have developed a habit of looking at their treatment and what makes them effective. Central characters, woven into the main plot, screentime, interesting dynamic, chemistry, etc, etc.
There’s a reason fandom tends to gravitate toward big subtext ships like Faberry, Supercorp, Swan Queen and why Clexa and Shoot took off as they did. People value the story as much as they do the romance. And yet, lol, looking at the treatment of most of our big canon ships, something goes wrong, right? The creators weren’t looking at things the way we were.
Telenovela and soap ships are thriving right now because they’re to give screentime and focus that regular shows can’t, but they still hold the same biases and adherence to tropes everyone else does. Deaths and babies and the insertion of men? We still get those again and again. Is it an actual lack of research and context that’s worked out so well here? Did they not see how often drama’s injected into our stories through those tired old tropes? It’s one thing to say, we’re going to approach this differently and not be influenced by…every single thing we’ve learned in the world through society and culture, and then a whole ‘nother to actually do it.
I suppose that’s why the tension is mounting in these last weeks through the fandom. The routine’s been perfect so far, just gotta stick that landing now.

Summertime Sadness pt. 2
So this fic got a lot of recognition and I'm happy you guys liked it :D
Without further ado, here's part 2
Tumblr media
_____
Valentina Carvajal wasn't someone who caught feelings quicky. She had learned the hard way with Lucho that fast relationships never end well.
But lately all she thought about was Juliana. Her smile, her laugh, the way her eyebrow twitched when she was deep in thought.
Valentina was falling, and falling hard.
_____
"Val can you help me wipe down the tables?" Juliana had asked her one night they were working late.
"Yeah sure."
Just as they were getting ready to lock up, a thunderstorm seemed to come crashing out of nowhere, knocking the lights out.
"Shit," Juliana said as she stumbled around for a flashlight.
The thunder roared to life and Val let out a squeak.
Juls dug around in a drawer for a flashlight. When she turned it on all she could do was laugh at Valentina's child-like behavior.
"Scared of thunder?" Juls laughed as they walked to the back room.
"Storms. Ever since I was a kid." Val said, sticking close to Juliana's side.
Juls pulled open the electric box and flipped the main switch. Nothing happened.
"Looks like we're gonna be here a while." she said while walking to the break room.
_____
The power had been out for at least an hour. Val had checked her phone and apparently the storm had knocked out the power on the whole block and everyone was advised to say inside.
Valentina decided they needing something to take their minds off the storm.
"Truth or Dare?" Val asked sitting upside down in her chair.
"What?" Juls laughed, looking up from her napkin drawing.
"Truth or Dare." Valentina laughed as she turned right-side up.
"Truth I guess?"
"Booooo," Valentina teased, "But whatever, your choice."
"Who was your first crush?"
"It was this boy named Marco. I didn't even really like him, but everyone else did so I figured why not?" Juls shrugged.
"Awe qué lindo." Valentina cooed.
"Okay okay. Truth or Dare?"
"Hmmm. Dare." Valentina said.
"Okay fine I dare you toooo," juls drawled out trying to think of something, "Oh! I dare you to eat a whole tub of ice cream by yourself."
Valentina snorted, "That's not a dare, that's a regular Sunday night."
Juliana laughed along as she grabbed a tub from the freezer.
"okay okay, I have a question." Val said as they dug in.
"What was your first impression of me?"
Juliana paused her spoon, "Honestly? I thought you were going to be a snooty little rich daddy's girl." She shrugged.
"Juliana!" Valentina gasped, "And here I thought it was love at first sight."
There was a pause before both girls erupted in laughter.
"No no but really, I did think you were gonna be annoying, even if you were kinda cute." Juliana blushed into her ice cream, thankful that the power had left them in the dark still.
"You thought I was cute?"
"For like five seconds before I realized how much of a dork you are." Juliana rolled her eyes.
Valentina scooted closer to Juliana, "It's ok I thought you were cute too."
Juliana looked Valentina in the eyes. Surely this wasn't really happening.
The girls' had their eyes locked on one another. Valentina was slowly leaning in when a particularly loud roll of thunder came through and scared Val.
Val let out a scared yelp while clinging to Juliana.
"It's ok Val, I'm sure the storm will pass soon." Juliana said while running her fingers through Valentina's soft hair.
Val nuzzled her face into Juliana's neck, "I hope the lights come back soon."
"They will. And until then, I'll be here to protect you."
"Promise?" Val said softly.
"I promise."

Chavela Valdes--Chapter 7
Valentina POV
The sounds of pens scratching on paper echoes in my new office. The wood paneling and hard chairs make no resistance to the echoing of my breathing or the tapping of my foot on the tile floor. My mind drifts off to long days in packed classroom and for once I wish to be inside one of those stuffy rooms than this bare office. I hear my office door open so I eagerly look up to my distraction. My hopes are broken when I see Renata comes in carrying another stack of papers in her hands. I roll my eyes as she comes to stop in front of my new desk with an encouraging and apologetic smile.
“Sorry, Miss Valentina. Mr. Guillermo asked me to bring you the final plans for next month’s meetings with the shareholders. He said he needs them ready and approved today so he can send them to Miss Eva for approval,” she explains with a shrug.
I nod and give her a forced small smile, “Thank you, Renata.”
“If it makes you feel any better, “ she smiles at me with a little shrug, “Miss Lucia kept up with her work fairly often so you have little else to do except review these papers.”
I smile at that, “Yeah. I feel bad for Mateo, he got the short end of the stick.”
Renata covers her mouth as she tries to hold in a laugh. Just as she moves her hand to speak, my desk phone rings and I look at it with a confused look. I glance at the secretary and with an encouraging look from her I pick up the phone with a little confidence.
“Bueno?”
"Hola hermanita. I have someone heading to my office in a few minutes. I’d like you to come with me to my meeting with them. They will be working with us for the foreseeable future and I’m sure you'll get along well."
I furrow my brows at my sister’s request but nod, “Sure. I’ll be there in a few minutes after I finish some reports.”
“Alright. Just walk in when you’re here."
With that, the call ends and I end up staring down at the phone in my hand with confusion. Eva rarely is ominous, she’s the type to burst into any situation with intentions on full display.
This could mean one of two things:
One: Something bad happened.
Two: She’s up to something and I’m at the end of it.
Two it is.
“Weird,” I mumble.
“Who was it,” Renata asks.
“Eva. She has a meeting right now that she wants me present for," I answer while hanging up the phone.
I look up to catch the older woman’s wide eyes filled with both annoyance and fear.
Renata shudders, “Good luck with that.”
I snort and start reading the new papers with a smirk, “I’ll take them to Guille myself, Renata. You get back to work so you can get out early for lunch."
“With your brother,” the secretary snorts herself, “I wish.”
I laugh as she walks out with a roll of her eyes. As I turn to the new papers my eyes catch the list of traditional Mexican cuisine the caterers would be setting up for the meeting. This leads me into a rabbit hole as my mind turns to a certain guitarist. I feel my heart speed up at the memory of her voice and sultry stare as she sang. The butterflies in my stomach suddenly die as I remember her anger and despair as she ran away after briefly meeting my family.
I sigh and try to focus on the task at hand, something that has been difficult all day as I have ended up think about Juliana in this same manner all morning. Luckily for me, my mind clears enough for me to work twenty minutes straight without disturbance. About five minutes later, I’m done reviewing signing the long drafts of guest lists and catering plans. With my hands full of papers, I walk out of my office and into the long hallway of executive offices.
“Miss Valentina?”’
I look at my secretary, Patricia, and just smile while waving the stack of papers in my hand. She looks at the papers then turns to the small sign next to my door. She flips the ‘In’ to ‘Out’ then continues her work. I take the small walk outside Guille’s office to Renata’s desk and hand her the papers. She thanks me and takes them, making sure to check that each signature is accounted. Once she’s checked, she places the appropriate stamps and I leave her to her work. I turn on my heel and walk through the long hallway, greeting back the secretaries and attorneys that I see on the way and make it to Eva’s office.
From outside the frosted glass door, I can see three figures inside. I furrow my brows and walk inside as directed. The second I step into the office I freeze as warm dark eyes look at me with apologies swirling in their depths. I'm too preoccupied with the young woman staring at me that I don't register my sister and stepmother sitting across from her.
—————————————————————.
Juliana POV
My eyes look up from my coffee cup to see the intruder to my chat with the Carvajal women. A tall slim figure dressed in a slim pencil skirt and flowing baby blue blouse stands by the door with wide azure eyes trained on me. I stare back at her. Our stare-down continues for an eternity until Miss Lucia coughs and Val walks in composing herself in a matter of seconds. I watch as the young woman turns around to close the door behind her, my eyes looking her over until they stop at…
"Juliana, I hope you don't mind my other guest."
I force myself to look away from the youngest Carvajal, attempting and failing at keeping a furious blush from appearing on my tan cheeks. My eyes connect with Miss Eva and I can see the mirth in her dark blue eyes. I desperately look away only to see that Miss Lucia is smirking into her cup of tea but also looking at me with the exact same look. I shift around in my seat and ignore three pairs of gorgeous eyes staring at me with various degrees of amusement.
I cough, choking on my spit, then shakily take my paper cup into my hands again. As Valentina comes to sit across from me and in between her two family members on the long leather couch, I drink the last ounces of coffee desperately in an attempt to not answer. But with the amount of sparkly gorgeous eyes trained at me, I force myself to answer.
"N-no. No probl--lem," I wince at my high pitch and then scold myself for answering in English.
Well, Juliana, at least now you know why you freeze up when pretty girls stare at you.
Nice job! Stand out even more, why don't ya?
SAY SOMETHING!
I stare down at my shoes until I sigh and look up at the three women. Their confusion and amusement is evident as I look at each of them. Their expressions change as I speak up again, this time full of regret and confidence. My eyes pass over each of them, connecting my eyes with theirs until I connect my stare with Valentina.
"I apologize for my behavior last week," I speak purposefully, "I’ve had a difficult time during these past months and I should not have allowed myself to take it out on your family. I’m usually good at keeping things to myself but--"
"Juls," Val cuts me off, "You don't have to apologize."
I blink.
I shake my head, "No. I do. I was rude. I ran off and did not explain myself. I--"
"Am an eighteen-year-old that suddenly has to provide for her family after a tragic accident," Miss Lucia cuts me off, "It’s alright, Juliana. What matters now is, are you alright?"
I continue to stare at the woman for a long moment. Finally, after receiving no answer, Miss Lucia reaches over and takes my hand gently. I feel my eyes water as her hazel eyes look at me with soft concern. My head whips away from them so I can try to compose myself.
"Fine," I whisper, "I’m fine now."
Someone sighs but I can't tell who. A second later, slim arms pull me into a warm hug and soft hair tickles my neck as their head takes the space between my neck and shoulder. The scent of wildflowers and chlorine hits my nose as I turn my head and see Val holding me in a warm embrace. Her crystal eyes stare up at me with warmth and kindness. I feel my blush come back as she smiles. A soft buzz of electricity passes through me as the embrace both excites me and soothes me. My eyes go to Val’s lips as she speaks and I force myself to listen to her speak. Luckily, I hear the tail end of her speech and hold onto that.
"If you need to talk. Lucia is a really good listener,” Val says with a bright smile.
I smile back, "What about you? Are you not a good listener?"
Miss Eva lets out a laugh and we all turn to look at her.
"Val? A good listener? A good talker, perhaps," the older sister chortles.
Val pouts and Lucia lets out a giggle. Val pulls away but takes my hand in hers as Miss Lucia and Miss Eva stand up to bring large binders over to us. A few minutes later, the coffee table at the center of the small sitting area is filled with binders and magazines. Val’s hand is warm and doesn't leave mine as the older women explain the photoshoot Miss Eva will be in. I nod along and write in the small notebook I brought with me as we talk about color pallets and clothing shapes. Before long, Val is involved by pointing out her sister's taste in dresses and shoes but also pestering her by giving her goofy looks and sticking her tongue out at her at odd intervals.
The one-hour meeting turns into two as the women start telling me stories of Mr. Carvajal and his tendencies to buy them the same clothes they posed in after their shoots. I smile as Val’s eyes sparkle as she describes her father with detail and clarity. Miss Eva and Miss Lucia grin and give small details along the way. I take note of their sad but happy expressions as well as their use of describing the mogul in the present, not the past. My heart squeezes and a sense of bitterness and longing taints my good mood.
I wish I had that.
I become quiet and stare at nothing. Thoughts of my ‘father’ and my past come to my mind and my hands turn into fists with each memory that resurfaces. I've pulled away from these thoughts as all three women read my mood and come to an agreement to end the meeting. Miss Eva stands and makes her way to her desk. A few buttons later and she’s chatting with her husband about lunch plans. Meanwhile, Miss Lucia looks between us then smiles warmly.
“You need food in you,” Miss Lucia says with a clap of her hands, “How about treating Juliana to lunch, Valentina?”
The youngest heiress pauses then eagerly nods to her stepmother. Bright hopefull blue eyes turn to me and freeze me in my spot.
“Do you want to come to lunch with me? I have to pick up some things for class this afternoon first. I don’t want you to be late for anything.”
I shake my head in a valiant attempt to wake up from her trance and answer, “No, Val. Today’s my off day. My mom is working at the restaurant though, so I do have to go home by ten or she’ll go Godzilla Mom on me.”
Val’s smile widens and she stands up abruptly, almost knocking off the binder in front of her, before leaning over to pull me up to my feet. I feel two pairs of eyes on me when Val directs me out of the sitting area and to stand by Miss Eva’s desk. I look over and see Miss Eva smile secretly before handing me a few papers. Without hanging up on Mister Mateo she speaks to me.
“Here is the schedule for the photoshoot and prep days. I have the interview two days before the photo shoot so you will need a week off. Is that okay?”
I look down at the schedule and count the number of days I won’t be working. I feel as if ice-cold water is being thrown onto me at the thought of letting my brothers down but remember Sal’s encouragement yesterday. With a small smile, I look up and nod.
“I’ll be fine ma’am,” I tell her, “No conflict whatsoever.”
Miss Eva smiles then turns pulls out a white key card and hands it to me, “This is the card for the media floor which is in the basement. I’ll meet you there on those days at exactly 7 a.m. Understood?”
I nod, “Yes ma’am.”
Miss Eva smirks at me then makes a ‘shoo’ motion, “Now then, go get lunch, children. Us real adults have work to do.”
Valentina’s response is to stick out her tongue at Miss Eva before pulling me along after her. As the door closes behind me, I see Miss Eva and Miss Lucia share a triumphant and knowing look. I have little time to process the exchange as Val is tugging me down the gaudy hallway and into another office, this one guarded by an older secretary. The woman looks to be close to her early forties. Her hair is mostly black but there are small strands of soft gray mixed in.
“Patricia,” Val calls out to the woman.
The woman looks up from her computer screen and smiles the Val.
“Yes, Miss Valentina?”
“This is Juliana,” Val says as she still holds onto my hand, “She’s allowed to enter my office any time she wants. Is that clear?”
The secretary looks at her boss with an odd look but nods, “Of course. I’ll make a note of it so security will allow her here.”
“Thanks,” Val says and she pulls me into her office.
“Thank you, Miss Patricia,” I call out as I’m pulled by sunshine personified.
The woman waves with an amused but confused smile until the office door prevents me from seeing her. I shake my head and turn back to the puppy-like girl running around her office. A small smile appears on my face until it grows into a large grin. Val’s constant chatter barely reaches my ears as I’m too busy watching her move around the clutter on her desk. She constantly glances at me as she goes about picking up her mess while picking up the things she’s going to take.
“I’m sorry Juls,” she sighs, “I’ve just started and this place is already a mess.”
I can’t help but laugh, “Well at least you admit it.”
Val narrows her eyes at me but the smile on her lips tells me its with humor. Seeing that Valentina needs help, I walk over to her and help her arrange the papers and folders thrown around her desk. The woman gives me a thankful push on the shoulder and I push her back playfully in response. Her soft laughter fills the baren office and I’m frozen in place as the sound somehow makes the muscles of my stomach twitch with glee. I make a mental note to make her laugh often so I can experience this feeling again.
Her laughter trails off and she suddenly becomes serious, “Are you sure you want to go get lunch together? I know Eva and Lucia said I should take you, but I don’t want to make you think you're obligated to.”
I stare at her for a second then speak up, “Oh? Uhm, yeah. I was actually going to invite you until Miss Lucia spoke up.”
This time Val blinks, “Invite me?”
I bite my lip and look down at my shoes. The image of Shia LeBeouf screaming to ‘Just do it’ plays in my head. My mind takes me to earlier this morning when Salvador called me. His words of wisdom and encouragement tip the scale in that direction. I breathe out forcefully then look up to meet Valentina's eyes. I feel my pulse still in fear but I force my mouth open to speak.
“Yes. I wanted to invite you. But not to lunch,” I take a deep breath, “I wanted to ask you out on a date, Valentina.”
The room is enveloped in silence as Val stares at me with wide eyes. I force myself to stare back in an attempt to read her emotions. I see surprise then excitement and finally giddiness as her plump lips from a barely held back smile.
“A date,” she bites her lip with upturned corners, “As in a date date?”
I can’t help but smirk and her adorableness, “Yes. A datedate.”
“Are you sure,” her brows furrow this time in hesitance.
I look into her eyes and Salvador’s words of wisdom echo in my ears:
“Carla gave her your number. Anita and the other servers said she had googly eyes all throughout our performance. Dios mío, Juliana! She came here Saturday to see if you were performing! Take a hint, hermana!”
“I like you,” I explain while reaching out to take her hands in mine, “Like a lot. Which I know is odd since we just met but I honestly can’t stop thinking about you. I’ll understand if you don’t feel the same but I wanted to ask you out anyway. I hope you don’t mind.”
She shakes her head and her expression changes from hesitant to relieved, “I like you too Juls.”
I blink.
“You-you do?”
Val smiles and nods her head. My face contorts to a large grin that I can feel my dimples appear. Valentina giggles and leans forward to press her forehead against mine. My eyes don’t close as she opens her mouth to speak.
“I’d love to go out with you, Juliana.”
A thrill fills my soul, “Really?”
She nods again.
“Good.”
“Good.”
“Perfect.”
“Perfect.”
We stare at each other until we break apart and the sound of laughter fills the baren office again. Still shaking from laughter, the older girl pushes my shoulder again and I grab onto her wrist before she can move away again. Val takes this as an invitation and ends up hugging me again as before on the couch, the difference now is the non-existent distance between our bodies. Her hands are now grabbing onto the edge of my jacket while my left-hand ends up at the small of her back. My other hand moves on its own to run my fingers through her soft locks. This gets her attention and my breath catches. Her clear eyes, now staring into mine, are now clearer to me than ever before. I count the shades of blue and white, the color reminding me of ocean waves and blue Texas skies.
“Estas hermosa.”
The words slip out of my lips without thought but I don’t regret it as Val’s soft peach skin turns pink with a blush. The girl then hides her face in the space between my neck and shoulder. I grin at the action and mentally fist pump at getting her flustered. I close my eyes and bask in our closeness. A rumbling against my chest makes me pull away to hear her speak. My eyes connect with her’s and she answers with a deeper blush appearing on her face.
“No como tu.”
“I thought you were rich,” I whisper.
Val looks at me with confusion and I grin at her.
“If you were so rich like all the magazines claim, you would own a mirror and see that you’re clearly the pretty one out of us two.”
My sweet talking is rewarded with a kiss on my chin and a deep blush that reaches the tip of my ears. The impact is so severe that I completely don’t see Val grabbing her things and pulling me towards the door. I finally wake up when the elevator doors close in front of us and Val is talking again.
“What are you craving, Romeo?”
I blink then smirk at her. Val raises an expectant brow and I answer with a stereotypical Texan accent.
“That’s Chavela Valdes to you, Miss Carvajal."

The Elevator Scene
Just a deeper look into the elevator scene with Juliana and Valentina. One of my favorite moments from the show. I will be uploading this to Ao3 if it gets a good response.
(Episode 45)
Magnitude
Valentina pushed the elevator button, watching Juls lean against the wall across from her. She wouldn’t be able to thank Jacobo enough for helping mislead the hitmen. The hospital was becoming such a dangerous place and Val wouldn’t entertain the idea of Juls and her mom disappearing, let alone think about what could happen if they stayed here unprotected. The police simply did not have the resources to protect them properly. Jacobo had come up with the perfect plan to keep Lupe and Juls safe, and importantly to Val, safe here in the city.
Valentinas stomach was twisted in knots from everything that was happening. It was as though an earthquake had hit, jostling her insides. Her emotions were fault lines, breaking and shifting, pieces of her being wrenched apart, twisted together, warped in ways that could not be undone. Yet somehow, through everything, the parts of her that had been torn to pieces had fallen perfectly in place, each fragment landing exactly where it needed to be. It all came back to the presence of the girl across from her. Juls.
Valentina’s heart ached for her as she looked at the clearly exhausted Juliana. Whatever Val was feeling, she knew she couldn’t imagine what Juliana had just gone through. She’d been on the verge of losing her mother too many times since the kidnapping. Finding her, gaining hope, and then almost losing her again all in the same day. It was too much for anyone to endure alone. Any stranger might look at Juliana and think she was unphased by the recent events, but Val could tell Juliana was emotionally exhausted. Anyone could see the physical exhaustion. It looked as though Juls were about to collapse. Valentina was ready at any moment to pull her into her arms if that were the case. It was one of the many reasons she was staying as close to her as possible. The physical exhaustion was to be expected. She hadn’t slept in days, she’s just been through one of the worst experiences of her life. What concerned Val were the little changes. The way her shoulders were slightly slumped, the way her deep brown eyes looked distant as Valentina gazed into them, the way Juls’ smile just didn’t quite turn up in the corners the same way as it usually did.
Even as fatigued as she looked, Valentina couldn’t get over how gorgeous Juls was. She took a brief moment to admire the brown eyed girl. The way her hair was tucked back in the simplest ponytail, there wasn’t a single strand in the way to distract her from admiring Juls’ face. The purple bags under her eyes were obvious, even under her sun-kissed skin, but the contrast only made Valentina admire her more. Her skin, her eyes, her cheekbones, her dimpled chin, her. And for all of the questions in Valentina’s mind at this moment, there was nothing that could change the perfection that was Juliana. Of that, she was sure.
Pulled from her moment, she saw Juls flash her a small smile. Valentina smiled sheepishly in return, as though she’d been caught in her thoughts, completely exposed. She wondered if Juls could see through her, read every emotion she was feeling. The thought terrified her, so she brought up putting the make-up on Lupe, hoping to lighten the mood. She sighed in relief when Juliana responded easily, reassuring her when she doubted their plan.
The elevator doors slid open, and to Valentina’s dismay they would not be the only passengers. A handsy couple was pushed up against the far corner, the woman pushing the man away as Valentina looked on awkwardly. The man sneered at them, his hands continuing to slide up and down what Valentina could now see as a pregnant middle-aged woman’s body. The woman pushed the man’s hands away once again, and finally the man straightened up, releasing his grip on her as Juliana entered the elevator.
Valentina considered grabbing Juliana and waiting for the next one, something about this man was making her very uncomfortable, but Juliana had already settled in at the back of the small space next to the man.
“Good afternoon” Julianna spoke politely, seemingly oblivious to the moment they’d just interrupted between the older couple.
Valentina followed quickly behind her, not wanting the elevator doors to close, leaving Juliana alone with these two. She couldn’t shake the feeling that something wasn’t right.
The man sneered again. “Good afternoon,” it was the woman that spoke, she looked as though she were a little embarrassed from being caught in such a compromising position.
“Hello” Valentina returned politely, deciding it wasn’t the woman’s fault. Perhaps his advances were unwanted by her. She wondered idly if they were a couple or just strangers.
Valentina placed herself at the opposite corner to them, hoping Juliana would move closer to her. The first thing she noticed about the man was the pungent smell of alcohol. It burned through her nose down to her lungs. The smell disgusted her. How much would someone have to drink to smell that overpowering? She gave the man a once over. He was shorter, and a little plump, but nothing significant about his stature really stood out. His blue collared shirt was wrinkled but clean, and the thick gold and silver chain around his neck suggested that he was either well off or a man who liked to spend what he had while he had it. Valentina couldn’t help but assume the later. His face was slightly worn, he had dark, greasy hair with blonde frosted tips, his hair line receding, exposing his large forehead. His eyes were dark and squinty, and his facial hair was like a physical expression of Valentina’s thought of the man, disturbing. Something about the way his handlebar mustache curled under his chin, and the little soul patch under his bottom lip made him look frightening.
Valentina looked at Juls, considering grabbing her hand and pulling her away from the man who was troubling her thoughts. She was just considering how to do so tactfully without making the reason obvious when she noticed the mans leeching dark eyes peruse over Juliana’s figure.
Blood boiled under Valentina’s skin as she watched the man shamelessly gape at Juliana, watching as he paused to admire her legs. She clenched her fists together as she watched him crane his neck to check out her ass. It was the way he was looking at her, as though she were simply an object made for his own personal viewing pleasure. What thoughts were behind those scathing eyes? It wasn’t hard to tell, and that made Valentina want to clench her hands around the man’s throat. They should have taken the next elevator. There was no escaping now.  Her eyes immediately went to Juliana’s. She had to get her as far away from this gawking scum as she could in this small space. She stared into Juliana’s now concerned eyes, silently begging her to come closer. Juliana was visibly uncomfortable, and she slowly began to slide away from the man towards Valentina.
Her relief was minimal, the man still hadn’t taken his eyes off Juliana. If anything, Juliana moving just gave him a better view of the curve of her ass. Valentina had watched long enough. She couldn’t help herself.
“Is everything alright?” She asked pointedly, looking the man square in the face. His foul eyes met hers briefly. He smiled maliciously and fixed his gaze back on Juliana. The cocky grin made Valentina’s stomach churn.
“All good” His eyes didn’t move.
Valentina stared him down, hoping he would get the point. Still, his eyes didn’t move. It was the worst feeling, watching this man practically undress Juliana with his eyes with absolutely no shame. It was disgraceful. Needing to feel Juliana, to let her know that she was right here to protect her from the creep’s assailing eyes, she reached her hand out, slowly brushing the back of her hand against Juls’, feeling the bump of each knuckle as their hands brushed against each other. The touch started to calm her. Juliana was right here, she was safe, no one was going to hurt her so long as Valentina was with her. She tried to convey each thought to Juliana with the brush of her hand. She reached down and intertwined her fingers with Juls’, feeling a jolt of longing when Juliana eagerly gripped Valentina’s hand. Juliana was scared. The poor girl who’d just been through worst with her mother was practically terrified of this man.
Valentina realized that Juliana and the man were now staring at each other face to face. There was something different behind the man’s eyes now. Valentina quickly placed it. Recognition. Juliana must have realized it too. Her eyes didn’t leave the mans, and her hand gripped tighter around Valentina’s. The blue-eyed girl rubbed her thumb gently over Juls’ hand, a silent promise that she would do anything to protect and comfort the girl.
Finally, the man spoke, “Are you the daughter of El Chino Valdez?” His voice was soft, yet rough. Almost snake like.
Valentina quickly glanced at the elevator display, with trepidation she realized they still had several floors to go before she could get Juliana to safety. In that moment, Juliana turned to her, looking up at her in fear. Juliana was lost as to how to handle the man’s question. She was unquestionably terrified.
Before anything else could happen, Valentina threw her arms around the shorter girl, pulling Juls close to her chest. Valentina didn’t have anytime to enjoy the closeness. She needed to answer the man before things got any worse.
“You’ll have to excuse her,” Valentina started. “She’s in shock, her mom just died.” Juliana had been recognized. Valentina knew they didn’t have any choice but to stick to the plan Jacobo created, hoping desperately that it would work. She brushed Juliana’s hair, trying to tuck her head into her chest away from the man, as if to shield her from the conversation she knew was about to unfold.
“And what happened? Was she sick?” the man asked.
“No, she wasn’t sick” Valentina answered. Juls was so close to her now, Valentina’s lips brushed against Juls’ hair as she spoke. “She was kidnapped and got shot” she continued, knowing full well the man already knew this.
As the man and pregnant women quickly conversed over the statement of facts, Valentina took the opportunity to pull Juliana closer. She dropped her mouth down to Juls’ ear. “Trust me,” she whispered low, the words were nearly a hum. “I’ll take care of this. I’ve got you” It was all Valentina had time to say before the man turned back to face the pair.
“So how did it happen?” He asked, not even feigning condolences on Juls’ behalf.
That was the turning point for Juliana. She twisted, trying to free herself from Valentina’s grasp to lurch forward at the man. Valentina wouldn’t let that happen. No Juliana, please no. Valentina brought her hand up to the back of her neck, pulling her away again as she spoke.
“She had a heart attack. She bled too much. They couldn’t do anything by the time she got to the hospital.” She explained.
The man nodded in understanding “I’m so sorry miss” he spoke again, unremorsefully.
“Thank you” Valentina spoke before Juliana could. Her lips were against Juls hair again. She’d hoped Juliana would understand that Valentina wasn’t thanking the man, rather she meant them towards Juliana for staying calm.
It wasn’t enough to keep Juliana from speaking. “And how do you know El Chino?” She asked, trying to pull herself from Valentina’s grasp.
The man smiled. “Friends” He answered simply. “When we were kids, we lived on the same block. Where is he, by the way?” The man asked. “I would love to give him my condolences” He gave Juliana another once over, his eyes lingering once again where they shouldn’t have. Valentina couldn’t wait to get off this elevator. If it wasn’t Juliana that would blow their story, it might be Val for the simple fact of this mans assaulting eyes unabashedly gawking at the girl in her arms.
“No idea. I haven’t seen him in a long time and I do not want to see him again.” The anger in Juliana’s voice was convincing. “Because of him, they killed my mom” She spoke truthfully. It was so convincing, Valentina almost believed it herself for a moment.
She could see Juliana’s full anger boil to the surface now. The elevator door opened just before Juliana’s mouth did. Valentina practically threw her out the door. “Here we are”. She fell in step behind Juliana, her hand resting on her lower back, pushing her forward around the corner away from the man.
“I’m sorry miss” The man called again. They were far enough away that Valentina barely registered the words. As Juliana began to slow down, Valentina reached for her hand, towing her along beside her away from the elevator, away from the people who had come to hurt her family.
“I swear they came to kill my mom” Juliana was seething. “They were obviously hitmen”.
Valentina felt a lump in her throat. They were hitmen. Juliana was in more danger than Valentina had initially realized when they first got in that elevator. Valentina needed to do something, she needed to protect Juls and Lupe.
“Let’s see, we have to—”
Juliana stopped at the large window, looking out at the parking lot as though someone caught her eye. Valentina saw exactly what she was fixated on. Two men getting in a blue pickup truck. She immediately recognized the man with the frosted tips.
“They’re leaving” Valentina exclaimed. What a relief it was, watching the man from the elevator get in the passenger side of the blue truck. She’d hoped that would be the last she would ever see of his dark and sinful eyes for many reasons. “They’re leaving Juliana, they’re leaving” The relief was so heavy on Valentina’s soul she covered her mouth, for fear that it might spill out of her. She clung to the feeling. “They believed it”
Juliana looked at her skeptically. “You think?”
“Of course, they’re leaving”
Juliana covered her mouth, laughing lightly in relief. The sound was music to Valentina’s ears. It was a sound she’d grown so fond of, and it had felt like ages since she’d last heard it. Juliana’s hand found Valentina’s waist as they watched the blue pick up truck drive away. As soon as Juliana turned away from the window, Valentina pulled her in for a hug. They’d hugged many times before, but nothing felt sweeter than holding her tight in her arms at this moment. Juliana was safe. The hitmen were gone. They’d bought Jacobo’s plan and wouldn’t be back here again. She nuzzled her face into Juliana’s neck, and felt the trembling body against her. It was torture for Valentina to pull away, but she had to look into Juliana’s eyes as she spoke.
“You can relax now” She assured her. Juliana nodded, understanding that for the first time she wouldn’t have to continuously look over her shoulder in the hospital.
They fell into step together. Although everything was better now with the kidnappers satisfied with their fabricated story, Valentina still wanted to get them out of the hospital. “We only have to get your moms medicine now and we’re done”
Juliana reached for her hand to stop her. The way Juls was looking at her with those pleading eyes, Valentina already knew she’d give her whatever she was about to ask for. “Val you know what, can you go? I don’t want to leave my mom alone.”
“Of course, of course. I’ll go” Val assured her. As much as she wanted to keep the girl close, she couldn’t ask her to leave her mother. She knew that Juliana would want to share the news that they were safe now.
“Thank you. And later you can introduce me to Jacobo, and tell him I said thank you for the idea”
Val nodded. “I’ll get him something on behalf of both of you, don’t worry” In truth, Valentina didn’t know how she would possibly be able to repay him for what he did for Lupe and Juliana, but she was beyond grateful to Jacobo for helping her protect the ones she loved.
Love. Looking Juliana in the eyes now, she knew that’s exactly what she felt for the other girl. The feeling was more overwhelming now than it ever had been before. It had been threatening to break the surface within Valentina for a long time now, and here it was. Ever powerful, it took everything Valentina had to keep from pulling Juliana in for another kiss. Their first one had been too quick, too short, too full of mixed emotions. Now, with the magnitude of her emotions in place, Valentina wanted nothing more than to place a million loving kisses on Juliana’s lips. Resisting the urge, Valentina pulled her in for a hug, lightly kissing Juls cheek. It would have to do for now.
She could feel Juls holding her tightly against her when Valentina tried to pull away. She knew that Juliana felt something too and could only hope it was similar to the love she so strongly felt for the girl. Knowing Juliana was safe would have to do for now, but she understood that she needed to express her feelings for the girl sooner rather than later.

Completely without context scene from the next instalment of the HP AU that I’m writing, under the cut. (Warning: some very specific Harry Potter references.)
.
Valentina stood in front of the mirror in her dorm room, giving her reflection a critical once-over. She was wearing Muggle clothes: dark jeans, a white shirt, and what her Muggle-born classmate Sierra called a “letterman-style” jacket. It was the first time she’d worn Muggle clothes, on Sierra’s suggestion. Sierra, who has Valentina’s closest friend among her roommates, had lent her the jacket and jeans. The girl was curvier than Valentina, so they’d had to charm the clothes to fit her, at least for the night.
They were going to a party in the dungeons to celebrate Ilvermorny’s first win of the season. The team could invite anyone they wanted who was in the third year and above, which meant that Juliana could not come. Valentina had instead extended invitations to her roommates, and Sierra and two other girls had happily accepted.
“Looking good, girl,” Sierra said as she stood beside Valentina to check her own reflection in the mirror.
Valentina smiled in thanks. “You too,” she told Sierra, who was also wearing a Muggle outfit. “Are you sure I have to wear this jacket?” she asked, adjusting the friendship bracelet Juliana had given her underneath the jacket’s cuff.
“Yes!” Sierra said as she put on her earrings. “That’s what all the sporty Muggle kids wear. Trust me, I’ve been told that I’m a good stylist.”
Valentina couldn’t help but think about Juliana, who liked not so much styling people’s clothes but sketching them. Juliana also wore plain shirts and worn jeans with such natural grace. Valentina, on the other hand, felt awkward in her clothes. She wondered if Juliana would like them.
She was interrupted from her musings when one of her roommates asked if Charles and Lucho were going to be there. Valentina answered in the affirmative, pointing out that they were also in the Quidditch team, but her roommates teased her anyway. They also teased her about Aldrin, one of their classmates, telling her that he would be heartbroken because she was going to a party with the other two boys.
Valentina could only respond with a smile and a good-natured roll of her eyes. Her classmates had been teasing her about the three boys for months, cheerfully informing her that the boys fancied her. She took their teasing with good humour, but she couldn’t relate to their excitement over them, or over boys in general. She wondered if there was something wrong with her, and so she’d covered with agreeable smiles whenever the topic came up. And it had come up frequently. Even Eva had subtly hinted that she preferred Charles over Lucho or anyone else. Nayeli had said about the same thing.
The thing was, none of the boys had ever outright told her that he liked her. Valentina thought that if they had, then maybe she’d have a better answer on who she liked, or liked better at least. But for now, Valentina thought nothing of their actions. She hadn’t even told Juliana that Charles and Lucho had been walking her to classes. It wasn’t important. Besides, she and Juliana had never talked about boys; Valentina wanted to keep it that way.
.
Valentina and her roommates finished getting ready after a few rounds of teasing, most of them directed at the other girls after Valentina did some deflecting. Valentina headed down to the common room with Sierra and the two other girls who’d accepted her invitation. Valentina was going to wait for Sergio to come down so they could go to the party together. Sierra chose to stick with her, but their two roommates decided to go ahead without them. After giving the two girls the password to be able to get in to the party, Valentina strode towards Juliana, who was sitting with her classmates in the couches by the window.
Not for the first time, Valentina wished Juliana could come with her. She’d told her best friend that she could sneak in to the party. Valentina herself had done so a few times before with Sergio, Nayeli, and Lucho, when they’d still been in their first and second years and a lot of fun events had been restricted to them. However, Juliana was a lot more hesitant than Valentina when it came to breaking the rules. Valentina would never force Juliana to do something she didn’t want, so Valentina had offered to stay with her instead. Juliana had looked at her like she’d grown two heads and had insisted that Valentina go to the party, pointing out that it was for her team’s first win of the season.
The look Juliana was giving her now was not dissimilar, though she seemed more surprised than anything else. Maybe. When Valentina stopped in front of her and Juliana continued her silent staring, Valentina started tugging self-consciously at her jacket. Maybe Sierra was not as good a “stylist” as she’d claimed.
“Do I look okay?” Valentina asked her best friend shyly. She spoke in English to be polite to Sierra, as well as to Juliana’s classmates. “Sierra suggested I wear a ‘sporty Muggle outfit’ and she lent these to me,” she said, gesturing at her jacket and jeans.
Juliana blinked, seemingly shaking herself out of her what-must-be surprise at Valentina’s outfit. “Uh--”
“Juliana,” Sierra jumped in, “please tell Valentina that she looks good. She won’t believe me when I tell her that this is what the Muggle sports jocks wear.”
“I didn’t say that I don’t believe you,” Valentina protested. “I’m just not sure if I’m pulling this off,” she added, looking towards Juliana.
“I-- you look good Val,” Juliana said, her voice softer than normal.
“Really?” Valentina almost whispered, looking into Juliana’s eyes and feeling relieved to find sincerity in them.
“Yeah,” said Juliana, smiling, her voice louder. “You’re definitely pulling that off. You-- it looks great!”
Valentina smiled widely then. She sat on the arm of the couch beside Juliana and gave her a sideways hug. “Thank you!”
“Oh, you believe her but not me?” Sierra said in a mock-offended tone as she took a seat on a nearby armchair.
Valentina responded with a sheepish shrug. It wasn’t that she didn’t believe Sierra, she just needed Juliana’s opinion.
She turned back to her best friend. “I’m sorry you can’t go to the party, Juls,” Valentina lamented, squeezing Juliana’s shoulder.
Juliana tapped Valentina’s hand. “It’s alright, Val,” she said. “I’m just hanging out with these two tonight,” she added, motioning to her classmates Grace and Alanna.
Juliana didn’t seem too cut up about missing a party. Valentina knew it was because she wasn’t into those kinds of things. It was why Valentina hadn’t insisted that she sneak in, even though she knew from experience that there would be little chance of Juliana getting caught.
Valentina looked between Juliana and her classmates. “What are you guys up to?” she asked, arm still around Juliana’s shoulders.
Juliana and Grace made a face while Alanna cheerfully replied, “Homework.”
“Transfiguration theory homework,” Juliana said, giving Valentina a deadpan look. “With all the equations,” she added darkly.
Valentina chuckled at Juliana’s expression. “Do you need help?” she offered. She’d found that equations often came easy to her. Besides, “I’ve gone through that subject before.”
“Val, no,” Juliana said gently, “you’re going to a party.”
Valentina shrugged. “I can catch up--”
“Oh no you’re not, Valentina,” Sierra interrupted. “I didn’t lend you that outfit so you can do homework. We’re going as soon as Sergio comes down. What is taking him so long anyway?”
“He always takes long to get ready,” said Valentina.
“Ugh!” Grace exclaimed before anyone else could reply. “It’s not fair that first and second years never get to go to anything fun. We’re not allowed in parties outside of the common room, and we don’t get weekends away from school.”
“Patience, young padawan,” Sierra said, mockingly serene. “We,” she gestured at herself and Valentina, “did our time, and so should you.”
Grace gave Sierra a half-confused, half-outraged look. Valentina was just confused, and, it seemed, so was Alanna.
“Pada-what?” said Grace.
Juliana started chuckling.
Valentina looked down at her best friend, smiling at her infectious laughter, which gave her a hint of what Sierra was talking about. “I think it’s some Muggle thing,” she explained to Juliana’s classmates.
“Muggle thing.” Sierra sounded insulted. “Muggle thing. I--I can’t with you purebloods,” she said, leaning heavily against the back of her chair, which gave a soft ‘thump’ at the contact.
Alanna spoke up after a moment. “Well, there’s the year-end play,” she said primly. “That’s open to first and second years,” she told Grace.
“Play?” Juliana asked, her brows furrowing adorably. “What play?”
“What do you mean ‘what play’?” said Alanna. “The plays that the Drama Club presents every end of the year.”
Juliana looked bemused. Alanna opened her mouth, probably to elaborate, but Sierra beat her to it.
“Waitwaitwaitwait--wait,” Sierra said, sitting forward in her chair again. “Are you telling me that you don’t know about the one thing-- the one fun-related thing that witches and wizards do better than Muggles?”
“I wouldn’t say it’s the one thing,” Valentina muttered. She’d learned about some non-magical sports from her Muggle Studies class. None of them involved flying.
“Valentina!” Sierra turned on her. “You have failed Juliana as a friend,” she said dramatically. “Why didn’t you tell her about last year’s play?”
Valentina bit her lip. The Drama Club had presented The Tale of the Three Brothers the previous school year. Valentina had already seen it twice before. The first time had been in London, when her mother had still been alive. Her mom, who had loved stories in all forms, would often take Valentina and her siblings to grand plays and musicals in the most renowned theatre districts the world over. The second time Valentina had seen the play had been back in Mexico, when Sergio had innocently invited her to a Spanish-language showing with his family, over a year after her mom had passed away. She remembered preferring the Wand the first time she’d seen the play, and then wanting, no, obsessing over the Stone on the second time.
Valentina had been avoiding any story that reminded her of her mom, which was why she preferred the Muggle novels Sierra recommended to her, but the one with the Resurrection Stone felt like a dark shadow wrapping around her heart. She’d done such a good job of ignoring last year’s play that she hadn’t even thought to tell Juliana about it.
She felt Juliana’s hand brush hers, pulling her out of her dark thoughts.
“What’s up with the plays here?” Juliana asked Sierra. The forced casualness of her tone told Valentina that she had gone quiet too long, and that Juliana was filling the silence. “I mean, why do you think it’s better than Muggle ones?”
Sierra’s eyes darted to Valentina in concern before she answered Juliana. “Magic! The production’s way better because they can just charm and transfigure stuff. Like… you’ve been to Muggle school plays right?”
Juliana shook her head. “No.”
“What? Why not?”
Juliana’s expression went blank, and she started worrying her fingernails with her mouth.
“Is it because of the Latina thing?” Sierra continued talking. “They said Latinx parents are strict. But I think black parents are just as strict, and my mom let me go to school plays.”
Valentina suspected that whatever prevented Juliana from going to school plays was more than just her parents being strict. She squeezed her best friend’s shoulder. “What play are they presenting this year again?” she asked the others, attempting to shift the subject a little for Juliana’s benefit.
“Oh, it’s The Fountain of Fair Fortune,” Alanna said, sounding excited. “I think the Drama Club’s current director is obsessed with Beedle the Bard. It’s, well… it’s a little juvenile, but both Three Brothers and Fountain look good on stage.”
Valentina smiled. “What do you think, Juls?” she asked, looking down at Juliana, who dropped her hand at the question. “Do you want to see the play? These two are right,” she said, motioning to Alanna and Sierra. “Well, I don’t know about Muggle plays, but the plays I’ve seen look amazing. And I think you’d love this one, they usually have the characters wearing unique clothes that fit their personalities.”
Valentina had seen The Fountain of Fair Fortune with her mom too, but she thought she wouldn’t mind going to see it now if she got to witness Juliana’s eyes light up in wonder at the spectacle.
Juliana looked up at her. “Sure,” she said with a smile and slight shrug of her shoulders.
“Yeah?” Valentina said softly, returning Juliana’s smile. “Great! They’re probably not selling tickets yet, but--”
“We’ve actually started selling early-bird tickets,” Alanna jumped in, pulling a ream of the said items out of her pocket. “Would you like to buy them now? They’re a lot cheaper than if you buy them later.”
Everyone gaped at her quietly until Grace spoke up. “It’s scary how you’re always prepared all the time.”

Chapter 20 _ Perdón
When Juliana opened the door she could not believe who it was. Her mother was standing right outside her door. Juliana didn’t know how to react, whether to let her in or close the door.
“What are you doing here?” Juliana said after staring at her mother for what felt like hours.
“Your dad told me you moved here and that he was coming to dinner with you.” Lupe said avoiding eye contact.
Juliana began to get angry at her mother. “Okay yes dad is coming to dinner with me and my girlfriend, the woman that I love, but what are YOU doing here? I thought I was your greatest shame and you wanted nothing to do with me if I was with Valentina. So why are you here?”
“Puedo pasar?” Lupe asked hopeful.
“No. What do you want?” Juliana said standing out of her apartment closing the door behind her and crossing her arms against her chest.
Lupe’s hopeful face fell. “July don’t be like this, I just want to talk. I’m not here to fight.”
Juliana simply raised her eyebrow encouraging her mother to continue.
“I would really like to talk inside with you.” Lupe said.
Juliana stood her ground against her mother. “I don’t want you in my apartment, it’s the place I plan to share with Valentina and I don’t want your homophobic energy around it. I love you mom but I’m in love with Valentina and you’re not going to change how I feel about her.”
Lupe let out a sigh in defeat at Juliana’s defensiveness. “That’s why I’m here, Juliana. I’m not here to try and talk you out of it. I know this is not a phase, I get it. You love her and I can’t get in the way of that. I want you happy, you’re my baby and I just want to protect you. I thought that by keeping you away from her I was doing the right thing but that just backfired completely. I’m here to say I’m sorry. I’m not ashamed of you and I’m actually really proud of you. Your father has kept me up to speed on your life since you left and how well it’s going and I’m really happy. I know we always fought about school but I’m glad you’re going after your dreams. Thank you for giving me 18 years, I’ll step away if you need me to but know that I love you and I always will. You know where to find me baby. Take care please. Te amo, y perdón por todo lo que te dije aquel dia.”
Juliana didn’t know what to say and Lupe took her silence as her answer. Her mother began to turn around and walk away with her posture showing her defeat. When Juliana finally realized what was happening she stretched her arm out to grab her mother’s hand pulling her towards her into a hug.
Lupe was taken aback by her daughter’s hug but embraced her tightly regardless. Juliana began to cry against her mother’s shoulder. “Gracias mami.”
“Te amo, corazón. Predóname.” Lupe said as she let tears fall from her eyes as well and she kissed the top of Juliana’s head.
After a few minutes they separated from their embrace and Juliana looked up at her mother’s eyes. “Would you like to stay for dinner?”
A huge smile invaded Lupe’s face as she said, “I would love that. Thank you.”
Juliana was about to open the door when she noticed Valentina standing awkwardly with her hands full just looking at the two of them with a smile on her face.
“Baby, Val. You should have said something, here let me help you with that!” Juliana said smiling at Valentina.
“I didn’t want to interrupt. Everything okay?” Valentina said as Juliana took some of the bags from Valentina and leaned in to give her a peck on the lips.
“Right in front of your mom’s salad, really?” Valentina said laughing and getting red.
Juliana let out a chuckle and linked her arm with Valentina’s while shaking her head and walking towards her mother. “She’s staying for dinner. I’ll tell you about it later though. I love you.”
“I love you too Juls.” Valentina said as they approached her girlfriend’s mother.
Juliana and Valentina stood together in front of Lupe. Valentina extended her hand for Lupe to take and said, “Hola señora Valdes, how are you?”
“Bien, Valentina, what about you?” Lupe responded while accepting the handshake.
There was an awkward pause and Juliana decided to cut in. “Well let’s go inside, yeah?” She said as she opened the door and led the way, dragging Valentina in with her as her mother followed.
“It’s looking good Juls. How are you this fast it’s looking great and you’ve only had around 3 hours to set up!” Val said as she set the bags of groceries on the counter. She stopped by the store on her way to Juliana’s new apartment to get the girl some food for the refrigerator and the pantry.
Juliana smiled as she took out the 3 boxes of Oreos Valentina brought to the apartment knowing they were Juliana’s favorite. It was definitely the little things that made her heart happy.
Lupe sat at the table while she observed the interaction between her daughter and Valentina. She saw how easily they got along and how gentile they were with each other.
As the hour went by they got more comfortable between the three of them and got into easy conversation. By the time Juliana’s father arrived he was surprised to find his wife there but glad to see that there was no hostility.
“Mija, I’m glad you and mother are speaking again.” Chino told Juliana as they shared a hug.
“Me too, dad.” Juliana said.
They enjoyed a lovely dinner as a family. Juliana & Valentina updated her mother on the news that she was accepted into the fashion school and that she was managing Renata’s new shop. By the end of the night they were all laughing and telling jokes. Lupe sat back as she observed how happy her daughter truly was.
When Chino & Lupe decided to call it a night they helped clean up the table and eventually said goodbye to the girls.
“I’m glad you and your mom are back on speaking terms baby.” Valentina said as she wrapped her arms around Juliana and placed her chin on her shoulder as Juliana closed the door after her parents departure.
Juliana turned around in Valentina’s arms and wrapped her arms around Valentina’s neck.
“Me too, baby. I missed her.” Juliana said as she leaned her forehead against Valentina’s.
Valentina closed her eyes taking in Juliana’s scent. She loved her perfume and since the night of the gallery show she felt even closer to her.
“Thank you for sticking by me, I don’t know where I would’ve been without you.” Juliana said leaning against Valentina’s chest.
Valentina wrapped her arms tighter around Juliana and kissed her head.
“I love you.” Valentina whispered against Juliana’s head as she held her.
“& I love you, Valentina Carvajal.” Juliana said as he leaned her head up to capture Valentina’s lips in her own.
The girls finished cleaning up and turned the lights off before heading back to the loft. Juliana was still staying with Valentina while her furniture arrived. Most importantly her bed because sleeping on the floor was not an option Valentina would allow.

Chapter 24 _ Primer Semestre
January had a rocky start. The press mobbed the girls for weeks following the article but Juliana had also gained massive support once the interview with Valentina aired. She began getting recognized on the streets more often than when they were first forced to come out to the world. The attention was overwhelming at times because she was used to her anonymity and she enjoyed her privacy but she also understood the buzz around their relationship. After all she was dating a media princess.
Juliana had graduated in the fall, an entire semester early. This meant she would be able to start at the institute sooner than originally planned. Juliana’s first day at RIC was on the 21st of January for the spring semester. Though the attention was beginning to die down it was a little hard to feel welcome on campus. When she passed people in the hallways they would stare at her and whisper to each other. Many rumored that the only reason she got into the institute was because she’s Valentina’s girlfriend. Others said that she received special treatment because she worked with Renata. Either way, none of her peers believed she got in because of her talent and that hurt but it also became her motivation to prove them all wrong. After 3 weeks the lack of support and isolation began to weigh Juliana down. Her life was under a microscope both inside and outside of school. It was becoming too much and she knew she had to do something or else it would all fall apart. She made the decision to sit down with Renata and Valentina to discuss her plans and ask for their advice on how to handle everything. Both women were aware of how much effort she was putting in and they understood that with a full school schedule and a full work schedule Juliana was under a lot of stress.
The Carvajal women arrived to Juliana’s apartment around 9pm on the first Wednesday of February. Five minutes early, to be exact, per Valentina’s request knowing how Juliana felt about her time.
Hearing Valentina’s usual knock, which always brought a smile to Juliana’s face, she made her way from the couch to the door. Greeting Valentina and Renata with a warm hug as she invited them in. Once inside the three sat down at the dinner table waiting for Juliana to speak.
“Chicas, I asked you here because as you are both very aware I am finally starting to feel the pressure of everything. I’ve been trying to keep it all together and deal as best as I can but I’m in week 3 of my classes and it’s all beginning to take its toll.” Juliana said speaking as honestly as she could.
Renata nodded her head as Juliana spoke. Deciding to respond with a simple, “Okay, how can we help?” and a warm smile.
Juliana smiled gratefully, knowing she made the right decision asking Renata here. “Well, for starters I think I’d like to cut back my hours at the shop if that’s okay with you. I know I can’t be as helpful to you as I used to be when I am constantly studying for my exams and working on designs for all six classes. So I don’t know how you would feel about hiring someone to help me and be there when I’m in class but I think that would lighten the load. I’m sticking to my full class schedule. I love working full-time at the shop and I do need the money, but school has to be my priority right now. I love the classes and the institute but you’ve heard the rumors.” Juliana said fidgeting with her hands under the table at the thought of what was being said about her. “I try to ignore them but they hurt sometimes and I can’t make friends because everyone thinks I don’t deserve to be there. I plan to prove them all wrong by the end of the semester no matter what. I know I earned my place and I deserve that spot just like everyone there. It’s only the first semester.” She finished sitting up taller than before at the thought of proving everyone wrong, no longer fidgeting under the table but instead feeling confident about letting her talent speak for itself.
Renata smiled at how comfortable and confident Juliana felt towards her talent. “Okay. Yes I agree, you need a coworker to help you out. I’ll find someone, thank you for being honest about it. About the rumors, don’t worry, it’ll all die down eventually. The professors love you and your work, they say you’re the most dedicated of the group so I’m very proud of you. I knew you’d be amazing and Ricardo Contreras was very excited to have you as his student after your presentation. You’re in great hands with him and the rest of the professors, just let them guide you and you’ll silence all the rumors. I’ve heard you’re not afraid to ask questions and I love that because the more questions you ask the less problems you’ll encounter. You definitely earned your place, the administration all agree on that so don’t worry about what the other students say, that will all go away soon.”
Juliana smiled and got up to give Renata a hug.
During the conversation Valentina sat silently observing her girlfriend. She was glad that Juliana felt comfortable enough with Renata and herself to ask them for help. After a few moments, Valentina finally spoke. “So how can I help, Juls?” Valentina had a vague idea of how Juliana wanted her to help, but she wanted to hear it from her girlfriend firsthand.
Juliana reached over to take her hand as she looked into her eyes. “I love you Valentina and I love us but the attention is getting a little overwhelming. Is there anything you can do to get the media to back down? I can’t go out to the street without someone following me. I know the fans are hyped about us but I need my privacy and they don’t seem to understand that sometimes.” She said as she ran a hand through her hair, her shoulders visibly tense as she continued. “I’m not in the media world, I didn’t ask for this, but I understand that it was bound to happen because of who you are. I don’t mind that but I just need it to die down a little bit. I need room to breathe. I can’t even go to the park because there is always someone following and you know that’s my place to escape when everything gets too much. I need my safe space back.”
Having one free hand, she tapped her fingers on the table as she spoke causing Renata reached over to grab Juliana’s free hand trying to comfort her, understanding exactly how she felt because she was once in her same position.
Valentina didn’t know what to say but she wanted to make this right for Juliana, somehow. She knew from the moment they started dating that this would not be easy when it came to the public yet she underestimated how much it would affect her girlfriend. She grew up in the eyes of the world but Juliana did not. She knew how to handle all the press, but Juliana did not. She knew when to stick to the script and when to be herself but this was all new to Juliana. Valentina had a tender look in her eyes as she tried to find her next words. She gave Juliana’s hand a squeeze before she spoke.
“Okay, I’ll do what I can. I’m sorry you’ve had your privacy taken away. I hadn’t realized because I’ve never truly had it but I see how much this is affecting you and I have to do something about it.” Valentina said rubbing her thumb over the hand she was holding as Renata placed a second hand over Juliana’s other hand grabbing the attention of the couple.
“I know exactly how you feel. I felt the same way when I first entered the family. It was scary, my family thought something bad would happen to me because of how vicious people were being. I took one of the most eligible bachelors off the market and everyone was pissed. I, too, had to ask for guidance and I’m glad I did. I had Valentina, Guille, & most importantly Lucia to help me through it. I say most importantly Lucia because like us, she was thrown into the spotlight when she began dating Leon so she knows exactly what that’s like. If there is anything I can do to help don’t hesitate to ask. We’re all here to help, we love you and I don’t think any of us want you to feel alone in this because you aren’t.” Renata said supportively.
Juliana let out a sigh of relief. It was refreshing to know that she could let herself be cared for like Valentina once told her to do. It was something she was slowly getting used to doing but Valentina made it easy to let down her walls.
“I love you, chicas, thank you. I knew I could count on you guys. Thank you for becoming my extended family. I don’t think I would have stayed in Sacramento, let alone California, if it hadn’t been for you two. This place is actually growing on me now and a lot of that has to with you two, especially you Val.” Juliana said as they all stood up and did a group hug.
As they pulled back from the hug Renata began to speak. “Okay girls, Val I don’t know if you’re heading home but Guille and I are staying at the loft. You’re welcome to stay with us if you’d like so you don’t drive home this late.” Renata said looking at her watch and realizing it was nearly 11pm.
Valentina looked at Juliana smiling and then over at Renata. “Thanks Natty pero I’m gonna stay with Juls tonight. She doesn’t like me to drive home past 10. It’s kind of our thing.”
“Cheesy but I love it. Okay, well your brother is outside so I’m gonna head out kids, behave.” Renata said winking at them causing both girls to let out a laugh as they said their goodbyes.
As they sat back on the couch, Juliana cuddled into Valentina as Valentina played with her hair soothingly. Juliana felt a sense of relief wash over her as the conversation replayed in her head. She was grateful to Valentina and Renata for their support. She had never had a solid friendship and opening up wasn’t something she was used to. Nonetheless these two made it easy to fully be herself and she felt their honesty and love.

Note
It really bothered me that when Lupe was ranting at Juls after finding out about her and Val she said that Juls got distracted by Val's wealth and flashy things. Im guessing she was trying to rationalize herself into thinking that her daughter couldn't possibly be into women, but she insinuated that her daughter was a gold digger and just: who DOES that? I hope when she comes around she apologizes for that too. (You can post this)
Mhmm, even at its kindest, to think oh my daughter was just dazzled by all these superficial things, it was implying Juls was so shallow, and like, really? She thinks Juliana Valdes is that shallow? And she’s met Valentina, who has been so gracious and so nice to her. To not know her daughter to that extent, wth.
You’re right, it was most likely the homophobia trying to rationalize things, but that really does not make it better. And the gall, after her choice in romantic partners. Juls has put up with so much because of some really poor decisions made by Lupe, including her sticking with Chino, her ACTUALLY morally incorrect decision to chase after and defend a literal killer of human beings. But it’s Juls who’s wrong and indecent here. Pfft.

Chavela Valdes--Chapter 3
After shopping for necessities, mom manages to get a job at a local cantina and had convinced the owner to have her start right away. Panchito gets us back home in an hour, just in time for Milagros to growl at us about how she wanted half the rent by the end of the weekend. I would have yelled at her if it were not for my mom grabbing my bicep to calm me down. I stay in our room long after mom left for her new job, as a means to keep the landlord alive and to practice.
I cradle the instrument in my lap while slowly sliding down the wall to sit on the floor. The roughly tiled floor rubbed against the skin of my thigh harshly, but I have no other place to practice seeing that the Evil Witch from the South was currently in the living room a few paces away.
Right then, let’s get started.
With the silencer covering my guitar’s sound hole, I practice some of the old ballads my guitar teacher had taught me. It became our ritual to teach me a new song every day, especially after the first week of class. No one truly wanted to learn how to play the guitar, they were just there for the easy grade, so having me actually wanting to learn was a godsend to the young teacher. Mr. Peña had been a kind person to me and even allowed me to take one of his practice guitars home after he noticed how I took to each lesson with ease. He must have seen something in me because after that he had me permanently placed into his class for the next three years of high school.
I wish I could have said goodbye.
I go through a few finger placement exercises until the sadness dies out, but the songs don’t. By the time I look down at my iPod and see that its almost 4’oclock in the morning my fingers have deep creases on the tips from the steel strings. I cradle my left hand and inspect the red digits. The worn skin has small cuts from being used again, but there was no pain to be felt. I sigh and close my eyes, hands instinctively playing a new song.
“I forgot how good you were.”
My mom’s voice shocks me and my hand makes a thumping sound as it hits my instrument. Mom gives me a sheepish look when I give her an empty glare from across the room. She smiles softly as she goes through the motions of getting ready for bed. Her long shiny hair is let down, and her clothes are exchanged with pajamas. Once she’s done, she comes to sit next to me. She cuddles into my side, reminding me of how I would when I was younger.
“You know I hate being startled,” I mumble, once we’re both settled in.
“Sorry, mija,” she grins, “Come on, play something for me?”
I look down at my mother’s hazel eyes and nod slowly, “What song?”
“Surprise me,” she smiles.
I nod again and quickly roll through the songs I have memorized in my head. My mother watches as I think then moves to sit across from me and against the bed. Finally, I start strumming the cocky and sassy song. Making sure my voice is clear, I start to sing with a grin directed at my mother.
Esas tus miradas de fulgor extraño Esa tu sonrisa de color de rosa Siempre me facinan aunque me hacen daño Porque eres muy linda pero desdeñosa
My grin starts to hurt as I see mom trying to hold back a laugh. My mood is cheery as I continue along, making sure to bop my head to the quick plucking I do.
Esas tus miradas de fulgor extraño Esa tu sonrisa de color de rosa Siempre me facinan aunque me hacen daño Porque eres muy linda pero desdeñosa
Mom coughs a laugh this time, her tan cheeks a little red for holding back her cheer. I try not to giggle as an effort to complete the song completely with no breaks.
Brindame el encanto de tus bellos ojos El sensual embrujo que en ti se adivina Para que en mi vida tan llena de abrojos Seas como una estrella que a mi alma ilumina
By now mom is covering her mouth with both hands, mirth bright as the sun rising behind us. My heart soars to see her happy, to bring some happiness in the midst of all this terror we’re going through. It’ the same feeling I had with Valentina in the afternoon, a painful need to see a beautiful woman smile at me instead of frown.
Brindame el encanto de tus bellos ojos El sensual embrujo que en ti se adivina Para que en mi vida tan llena de abrojos Seas como una estrella que a mi alma ilumina
As I go through the last fast-paced strumming, my mom’s giggles get the best of her once the song ends. I giggle along with her as she stands up from next to me. I place my guitar in its case on my side of the bed. My sleepiness night catches up with me as I set my phone’s alarm for later this morning, the volume only high enough for me to hear. With a huff, I settle myself next to my mother on our small bed. I glance over at the older woman and she smiles sadly at me before turning off our only light.
My mind continues to run long after my mom’s breathing deepens into a dreamless sleep. I stare at the ceiling, unused to the new sounds and feeling of the space I’m in. Annoyed, I quietly get up from the bed and make my way to the living room and into the kitchen. I pull a cup from the rack and fill it halfway. I sigh and drink slowly, trying to quiet down my thoughts. Once finished with my drink, I wash it quietly and place it back on the rack.
My footsteps are quiet on the neon pink tiles. I’m passing the coffee table when a familiar picture catches my eye. The latest issue of Cosmopolitan sits on the table with a dog-eared page. I raise an eyebrow and stare at the magazine for a second. Curiosity gets the best of me so I grab the paper book and flip to the page that is saved.
“No way,” I whisper gasp, “It can’t be.”
But it is.
Who else can it be?
Splattered across the page is a title to an article that should be in a National Enquirer instead of a Cosmo.
Léon Carvajal: El Ultimo Adios
Underneath the morbid title is pictures of a well-aged man in a fitted suit. His features are sharp but also aged just enough to show his age. His hair was multicolored, black fading into grey and then into white in spots. His smile was warm but strong as if to say he was the boss. Underneath the collage of pictures of his life throughout the years are pictures of his funeral form a few weeks prior. A strand of pictures is framed at the bottom but one, in particular, forces my attention on it.
In the center of the picture is a brunette with watery eyes wearing all black and sitting on a couch alone. Behind her are people lingering around a warm brown colored casket, a strike of platinum blonde surrounded by a group of brunettes. All seeming to be the immediate family. All not noticing what the lonely girl has in her hands: a silver flask.
“Valentina,” I whisper with a broken heart.
I read the article and get annoyed as they speak of my new friend and her family. The writer obviously using this man’s death as a way to sell copies of this month’s magazine. I sigh and close the book, making sure to place it where it once was so Milagros won’t see a difference. My feet still make no noise as I enter our room. Mom is still asleep as I get into bed next to her. I stare at the ceiling for a moment then close my eyes, one thought lingering in my mind.
Well, right now I don’t think it applies here.
“It will,” I mumble as I fall into the abys, “I’ll make sure of it…”
_________________________________________________.
The morning comes fast, almost as fast when we were on the run a few days ago. It blends into the day so well that the dream world isn’t even acknowledged to me as I wake up at 7’olock. I quickly get ready without waking mom up, knowing full well the hell I will have to pay for her not coming with me. I’m far too concerned with her getting her own rest then my own safety as I watch how peaceful she looks. The kitchen smells of food when I exit our room, but I ignore the woman cooking as my pride is too much for a pity breakfast from her. With a forced out ‘good-bye,’ I walk out of the house and into the sleepy streets of Mexico City. Pulling up the address on my phone, I pull the strap of my guitar case tighter as to not have it taken from me in a worst-case-scenario.
The way to my new job was a nice way to get used to the city as it goes through el centro and the marketplace it stands on. There are many streets filled with people selling form their homes or pop-up stalls, mostly of spices, fresh vegetables, and the occasional clothing or electronics. The scents of the pile of spices lined around my path tickle my nose in a way that reminds me of my empty stomach. I’m spared of this painful journey as I approach a large building sticking out of the mayhem as if it were a center point of the area. As I approach the restaurant I take not of its old Spanish style, the kind that was made to attract the tourist population: red brick with white trims and wide bay windows. My feet carry me up the flight of stairs and through the front arches leading inside to the second floor.
The fluorescent lights make my eyes hurt as I to adjust to my surroundings. I blink back the shadows and look around, taking notice of the large murals on each wall. Taking one side of the building is a large bar with two stainless steel doors that would lead to the kitchen. Decorating the counter behind the marble bar are figurines of Catrinas and Alembrijes on each shelf. There are artisanal wooden tables with matching chairs placed neatly in the space to make the best use of the size with paper floral centerpieces. It was a purely Mexican restaurant that one would see in a stock image photo.
“Juliana! Good morning!”
I look over to the sound of Salvador's voice and see him along with a group of five other young men that look to be around his age. Salvador stands in the center, a few inches shorter than the tallest man. To his right were two boys, twins actually, with light skin and eyes that matched their dirty blonde hair. Their round faces made them look young, a few years older than I am, and so did their smirks and bright hazel eyes.
On Salvador’s left were the other three young men, all three handsome and tall. The tallest, which stood directly next to Salvador, had black hair and dark eyes similar to Salvador except for the broody look on his face. On the broody guy’s left was a boy with dark skin, obviously from African descent, that hade burning green eyes to contrast the rest of him. This guy’s expression was kind and open, an expression that helped calm my nerves. Finally, the last young man had bright reddish hair and super pale skin. He looked like he belonged in the hills of Scotland, not the streets of humid Mexico.
As I approached the group, I pulled my shoulders back and stand straighter to make myself look taller. The second I was a foot away, the twins pulled me into a hug and started chattering into my ears. I stay frozen in place as the two boys tug me by my jacket.
“I can’t wait to hear—”
“No, you said we were—”
“No, Sal said we have to—”
“Sal said, more like you—”
“STOP!”
Salvador’s voice booms in the restaurant, shocking the twins to look back over at him.
“I’m sure you will have time to get to hear Juliana’s,” Salvador says as he drags them into submission, “Now, how about some food while we get to know each other?”
The twins quickly pull away and run to one of the long wooden tables nearby. I stare as they push each other back and forth like only siblings do. Sal brings me back to my current position as he claps me on the back softly and pushes me carefully to the table. We all take our seats and watch as two waitresses come and start serving us some traditional Mexican breakfast. My mouth drools as one waitress places a plate of huevos rancheros in front of me. I stare down at the food then look up and around me. The boys were all tucking into their own food, taking the liberty to take from the large dishes of sides on the table to place on their plates.
A tap from my right directs me to the dark-skinned boy, he smiles encouragingly and makes signals for me to eat in a polite manner. I glance at Salvador and he smiles back, so I sigh happily and eat along with them. The breakfast is good, the only downside is that I couldn’t eat more. I sigh and sip the rest of my agua de frutas while Salvador introduces the other boys.
The twins were named Raymundo and Ricardo, kids to a widowed father of a family of eight. The redheaded boy’s name was Francisco, or Franky, and was son to an American teacher and British painter. The darkest skinned young man was named Axel, had immigrated to Mexico City a few years ago with his parents from Argentina. Finally, the broody guy that looked very similar to Salvador was introduced to me as Raúl, Salvador’s cousin.
They were all kind, except Raúl who was still a bit cold and distant and talked to me about the city and such. The conversation came to a halt when Raúl reminded us of the two outfits that I had to try on. Salvador stood up and quickly went into the employees only room. The man comes back carrying two outfits covered by black coat bags.
“Sal huffed, “Thanks, Raúl. Juli, go try them on please.”
“Okay,” I sighed, taking the two bags, “be right back.”
Axel kindly points to the restrooms and I walk in the direction of them. I quickly go inside and let out a large breath I was keeping inside. Trying to calm my nerves, I carefully hang the two protected outfits on the stall door. A few minutes later I’m pulling on the tight black pants on, the pant legs are a bit longer than me but easily fixable. The soft white dress shirt is a bit too large but I tuck it into the pants before pulling on the black vest and finally the black jacket over that. The gold tie is tricky to get on, but after a minute of struggling I figure it out. The tan belt with obstaniously large belt buckle settles perfectly on my waist.
I open the door to the stall and step into the larger part of the restrooms. With a glance over the uniform, I turn to look at myself on the large floor-to-ceiling mirror. A gasp leaves me as I look over myself. The clothes are a bit too loose but I can see with a bit of a tweak here and there I can get it to look amazing on my small frame. I looked the part of a mariachi player, except for my loose hair and converse. With a small smile I use the band I keep on my wrist to pull my hair up in a bun.
“Better,” I sigh.
“Juli,” Sal asks with a knock on the door.
“Just a second,” I call back.
Taking one more look over myself, I turn and walk out. All five boys look up and take in how I look. Sal and Axel smile largely at me while the twins smirk and nod happily. Raúl walks from his position against the wall and walks around me, eyes rolling over me with a heavy stare. The boy comes to stand in front of me and stays there for a second. I hold my breath as he turns around to the table and takes the large traditional hat. Raúl slowly and gently places the hat on my head, positioning it to face forward correctly.
“You need dress shoes, maybe even boots,” the young man tells me, “What’s your size?”
I blink, “Uhm, nine.”
“Americans,” Raúl rolls his eyes but turns back to a bag he has next to the wall.
He pulls out a pair of black leather boots, “Put these on, they should fit. They belonged to my sister, but she doesn’t even wear them so…”
I stare at the man before sitting where he pointed me to. Raúl crouches down and pulls my tennis shoes off then replaces them with the boots, telling me to adjust the shoes as needed.
“Stand up,” he tells me, “I need to see that you don’t look like a fool next to us.”
I huff but do as he says by allowing him to look me over again. Once he is satisfied, Raúl nods at me then at the others.
“She’ll do,” he proclaims, “Just needs to get them both fitted, but she should be fine.”
Sal grins, “Good. Go take that off, except the boots so you can get them worn in and get back here so we can practice.”
“Okay,” I nod and turn to follow his orders.
I make it into the restroom and once again let out a large sigh of relief. Though I felt a bit on edge from having Raúl look me over, I understood his need to have me look good next to them. My mind kept traveling to the boys as I undressed and redressed, mostly thinking how easily we got along during our breakfast. By the time I had got the suit and hat into their proper places, I was ready for practice. The boys are now standing on the makeshift stage waiting for me as I approached them.
I look over the instrument they are holding as I pull my guitar out. Salvador, no surprise, is the other guitarist. Axel holds a shiny trumpet and is doing scales with Raúl who is the second trumpeter. The twins surprise me as they tune their violins, the shape, and color the instruments almost exact to reflect their owners. A grin pulls at my lips as approach my bandmates, ready to get to it.
“Alright,” Sal tells us, “You went through the setlist I gave you right?”
I nod to Salvador, “Yeah I went through it. I knew all of them already, so I’m fine.”
“Good,” Axel nods, “Let’s go through it and then decide which parts to add or correct.”
“Which brings up another thing,” Raúl huffs, “Do you know how to sing?”
I shift in place trying to ignore their stares, “A little.”
“Then we try that too,” Raúl nods, “Let’s start then.”
With that, we begin practicing for the day.
____________________________________________________.
The wind blows my hair out of my face as I stand in the sun. My eyes don’t leave to marble rock in front of me, newly placed onto of the grave of my husband of only a few hours. I stare at the rock for another minute before a tear is released from my eye and flows down to fall into the large field of grass.
“I wish you were here. The bed is too big without you. The house is too cold. And don’t get me started on the company,” I whisper to Léon, “I’m trying my best to pick up where you left off but Johnny is such a snake! Honestly, how didn’t you see how much of a backstabber he is? He’s off speaking with presidential hopefuls and big company CEOs—completley what you’ve always been against! To top it all off he’s been flirting with me, some adopted son you picked out Léon! I’m pretty sure he’s behind all this. His actions speak for him. I can’t get proof yet, but I really hope Eva can have a change of heart so she can help me at the paper. If I have her and Guille on my side, I’m sure I can catch him in the act.
“Eva is angry She thinks this is my fault. I suppose it is, you were killed at our wedding. Guille, well Guille is trying to be strong but I know he’s finding comfort with drinking his sorrows away when he’s not working. As for Valentina—she’s a mess, my love. I’m having the staff keep an eye on her, but I know she’s been sneaking alcohol into her room at night. I really hope she finds a way to get out before I have to call a family meeting on her.”
“I wish you were here,” I whisper with a sob, “We all do.”
As if answered, the wind blows again cooling the hot trail of tears on my cheek. I sigh and hold myself for another moment, thinking about my family and their individual struggles. Suddenly, the sound of guitars strumming catches my attention. I look up to my right and see an elderly couple standing next to each other as a young girl sings over the grave. Her dark hair is pulled up in a bun with a few strands falling over her cheeks allowing me to see how young she is. Perhaps Valentina’s age? Her clothes are worn and faded in color, reminding me of my time in the streets.
I watch as her soft voice carries lovingly through the cemetery and creates a strange peace that otherwise should be filled with a turmoil of the living. The girl finishes the song and allows the sound to bounce around the empty plain before turning to shake hands with the elderly couple. The old man dabs his eyes with a handkerchief and shakes her hand kindly. The older woman smiles as well and hands her a few bills in return for her service. The girl shakes her head but is forced the money into her had by the older woman. I smile as the humble girl goes through the motions of the Holy Cross then bows her head to the elderly’s dead before leaving them be.
I watch curiously as the girl counts the bills and does the Holy Cross again with the money in her hand, a sign of a thankful worker, before putting the money in her front pants pocket. I look down at Léon and remember how kind he was and willing to help me when I was in that young lady’s shoes.
“I suppose this is a sign,” I tell him then look over at the girl, “Hey! Young lady! Come here, please!”
The girl looks up and stares at me for a second before jogging up to me. I let her catch her breath for a second before speaking.
“What are you doing here,” I ask, “They normally don’t let anyone in here, it’s a private cemetery.”
“Oh,” she shrugs, “A friend’s uncle works here, and he told me I could come here to earn some money.”
My eyebrows furrow, “It’s really hot though. Can’t you find something better?”
“I can. I mean I do—have a job,” she sighs, “I play in a mariachi band and get a cut from what we earn, but I need more for the rent of the place I have. I don’t want my mom to work too hard, she’s been through enough this past year. I want to help her, so she won’t worry as much.”
“Past year,” I ask, “What happened?”
The girl sighs, “Well, my dad died during work. We had our house, well trailer, taken away and had to come here. We found a place but the landlord, well, she wants the rent for this whole month by this weekend.”
“What,” I gape, “That’s completely unfair! Most landlords give a week…”
“Yeah she did, originally,” the girl rolls her eyes, “But my mom could only get a job at a bar, so when she found out she gave us until Saturday. Something about being a streetwalker.”
“That’s just three days from now,” I whisper, outrage at this unknown landlord for acting this way to a recent widow.
“Yeah,” the girl nods, looking at her scuffed-up shoes, “That’s why I’m doing whatever I can right now.”
I watch as the girl shifts the guitar strapped over her shoulder from one place to the other. Seeing her up close made it even more clear how young she is. My heart tugged at her sad but determined look. With a sigh, I turn to my guard.
“Can you let home know I have another errand to do and might not get home on time,” I shout to Alirio.
“Yes, ma’am I’ll let them know,” he calls back.
I turn to the girl and pull my hand out for her to shake, “Lucía, and you are?”
The girl blinks back at me then shakes my hand politely, “Juliana.”
I grin and motion for her to follow me, “I have a job you can do for me. I need someone to come shopping with me. I need an honest opinion on what I’m wearing, I know these men won’t have a reliable opinion other than blank staring. You can also help me carry my bags to the car.”
Julian turns to me with wide confused eyes, “I—”
I cut off the girl, “Don’t worry. I’ll pay you for your time. I’m sure it will be more than the amount you’ll get here.”
“Why,” she whispers.
“I know how it feels,” I answer simply, “Now come on, I actually do need help deciding.”
Juliana stares at me for a second then grins, “Thank you, Ms. Lucia. You don’t even know me, but…”
I smile at the girl and pull her by her elbow. The door is opened by my guard and I enter the vehicle with Juliana. The young woman stays quiet as she stares out the window, enjoying the view as we reach the closest boutiques I like to go to. By the time we reach the stores, Juliana is a bit calmer and responds to the few questions I ask her.
The first store is filled with expensive ball gowns, a perfect place to find a dress for my meeting with the Spanish Ambassador in a few weeks. Juliana is in awe as we enter and a saleswoman quickly greets us with an overly bright smile. I let her down gently and once she’s gone I turn to my new companion.
“Alright, what should we start with,” I ask her.
Juliana pauses and looks me over quickly before looking around. I watch as something catches her eye from a nearby rack. The brunette scurries to a rack full of red and maroon dresses and quickly goes through them until she finds what she’s looking for. A bright red dress with a backless design and a long train is presented to me with excited and nervous eyes.
“Try this one,” Juliana mumbles, “I think it will suit you.”
I grin at the timid girl and take the dress with no complaints, leaving her shocked at my silence. I walk towards the dressing rooms and turn around with an encouraging look.
“Perhaps look for other ones,” I encourage her, “I’m always looking for good dresses for events.”
This seems to calm the girl as she smiles back at me and continues to look over the racks. The afternoon goes on like this. From store to store, my new stylist picks out clothes for me to try and I do as she says. By the time dinner time arrives, I have many new bags filled with clothes and accessories. I’m shocked that this little thing of a girl knows how to style clothes in just the right way and to fit my style. I’m sure she has a good future if she pursues a career in fashion. As I tell her this, she blushes brightly and scuffs up her shoe on the concrete paths.
“I’m not joking Juliana,” I pat her arm, “You could be a professional stylist or even a designer.”
“I’m flattered, but I’m more concerned with the food on the table,” she rolls her eyes like the teenager she is, “Maybe someday but not soon.”
I sigh, completely understanding her situation. I could help her but a strong woman like her, like me, would not like handouts. She wants to make things from her own strength, not the strength of others. I look down to her shoes and see that the worn Converse are really in need of replacement. The edges are almost all the way unsealed from the cloth of the shoe. The bottoms are worn out to the point that the grooves are almost gone.
I suppose I could help her with this at least.
“You know, my stepdaughter could use some new shoes,” I glance over at the girl, “I think you might have the same size as her. How about coming to help me find her a new pair before we drop you off at home? What’s your shoe size?”
Juliana stares down at her lap then looks up at me with a reluctant smile, “Oh, I’m a size nine, I don’t know about matching since I have a big foot….but I guess I can help…”
With a grin, I pull her with me to the closest shoe store. We walk through the long shelves of shoes until I find the Converse section and conveniently walk through the section. I watch as Juliana stops walking and stares at a pair with desire in her eyes. The pair was all black except for colorful stars dotting the fabric. The girl then shakes her head and continues on into the shop. I grin and pull out the correct size. With a signal to Alirio to take my credit card and pay for the pair. I grin as he walks back to the car, most likely to hide the pair in Juliana’s guitar case while I make sure the girl is not looking.
Through my show, I manage to find pairs for everyone. Before long I have new pairs of shoes for Valentina, Guille, and Eva along with a few heels for me and the girls. Juliana helps me carry the magnitude of shoes to the clerk and we quickly leave the store after that.
“Thank you, Juliana,” I tell the girl once we’re on our way again, “I really enjoyed your company.”
“I enjoyed it too,” the girl tells me, “You remind me of my mom, easy to talk to.”
“Well she raised a very kind woman,” I tell her, “I really hope things get better for you two.”
Juliana shrugs without looking at me, “So do I. I just hope this job gives me enough money so she won’t worry about the rent.”
“This job,” I start, “Is it in a band that goes to events, gets booked, or is it in a restaurant or…”
“Oh, both,” she nods, “It’s at a restaurant and sometimes we’ll go to parties and such. That’s what Salvador said anyway, I haven’t played once yet. I only just got the outfits today.”
“Wait, you mean you haven’t played anywhere yet,” I ask.
She nods, “Not yet, Friday is my first day. Today I met the band and practiced until an hour before I met you.”
I nod, “Well now I’m interested. You must be very good if they think you’d be ready in two days.”
Juliana turns to me and furrows her eyebrows, “I didn’t think of it like that. I just figured they needed cash too, you know for expenses and such.”
I smile, “I don’t think so. They must have a lot of faith in you after hearing you. I know I liked your singing from what I heard in the cemetery. I want to hear more from you. I’m sure you sound even more lovely with a full band to accompany you.”
Juliana’s tan cheeks turn rosy as she shifts in embarrassment, “Um yeah, thanks.”
“We’re here, Seńorita Lućia,” the driver calls to us from the driver’s seat.
I look out the window and see the humble streets lined with buildings decorated with chipping paint and cracked walls. Juliana sighs and tugs her guitar case over her shoulder. As she begins to open the car door, I take her left hand and squeeze it as a mother would do. This gets her attention and she waits for me to speak.
“Take care of yourself, okay,” I insist, “I know you’re tough but be careful.”
Juliana looks at my hand and then back up, “Okay, I promise.”
I smile and kiss the girl’s cheek, gaining another full-on blush, and tuck into her hand a crisp hundred-dollar bill. Juliana gapes at me and I simply smile back at her. Taking a moment to gather her thoughts, the girl leaves the car in a daze and makes her way into the small home. Once outside, she waves at the car and makes quick work of the many locks to get inside. The door closes with a large bang sound.
“Let’s go home,” I tell the driver once Juliana is inside.
